Tao
MEANING OF TAO

The wisdoms of Eastern religions are progressively slipping into Western cultures. Yet many of us have not taken the time to figure out the basis of these religions. Taoism has its basis in harmonizing and tranquility with the self, others, and God who flow together to make up life. Taoism (pronounced with a “d” instead of a “t”) focuses around the word, Tao. The word means way, or path. There are three different senses in which the word is understood.
  1. Way of Ultimate Reality
Here we have the transcendentalist part of the Tao. It can also be called the mystery of life. The Tao Te Ching says, “The Tao that can be spoken is not the true Tao.” We are not supposed to understand, but to recognize there is a higher being in life that guides and will be known to us after this world. Acknowledge and be thankful for it.
  2. Way of the Universe
The second part of the Tao is the flow of nature and backing of life. It is the spirit of encompassing everything. There is a purpose to it; we can understand this as the steady ongoing river we live in. Embrace it.
  3. Way of Human Life
This is us and the river of life interacting, harmonizing. Here we have how to live our lives with meaning and generosity. The Tao beautifully describes the third part in Chapter 27: “One may move so well that a foot-print never shows, Speak so well that the tongue never slips, Reckon so well that no counter is needed.”
