IP Posted by eric11 Oh Sweety you had your test! Damn, some help I was then. I hope you get a good mark.
No its fine, no worries. It was mostly my fault. I gotta start taking my laptop with me again -- I did it in the summer! Before my old laptop died, it went everywhere with me. I will discuss more chemistry with you tomorrow. I'm getting chills dude I don't feel good at all, I hope its just a cold because I have work, homework to do and a party to go to tomorrow. Oh dear, I don't think anywhere can cover for me tomorrow at work, which sucks. |

IP Posted by eric11 Hey Cappysweetie, A molecular equation is simply an equation that contains no charges. I.e. = NaCl(s) + KOH(s) + H2O (l)-> KCl (aq) + NaOH (aq) + H2O (l) A ionic equation is when you show the ionic charge of reactant and product. i.e. = Na(+) (aq) + Cl(-) (aq) + K(+) (aq) + OH(-) (aq) -> Na(+) (aq) + Cl(-) (aq) + K(+) (aq) + OH(-) (aq) Notice it is the exact same equation accept that I applied charges to each element. When you mix salt in water you no longer see the solid salt. Why? You don't see it because the compound salt, NaCl (s), has dissolved in the water. Is it still there? Yes it is because you can taste the salt in the water! We call the free salt ions electrolytes. There are many kinds of salt compounds. Because the ions ar emoving around freely in the water it is hard to know which one is reacting and which one is spectating. Inorder to determine this, we need to identity the specating ions and the participating ions. The result of this process is called the Net ionic equation. It is the equation that contains only the participating ions and leaves out the spectatingions. I.e. NaCl(s) + KOH(s) + LiCO3 (s) + H2O (l) -> KCl (aq) + NaOH (aq) + LiCO3 (s) + H2O (l) is a molecular equation. Two species here do not change: H2O and LiCO3, hence they are the spectators. If we get rid of them, the Net Ionic equation is, NaCl(s) + KOH(s) -> KCl (aq) + NaOH (aq)
YAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 I got that right on the midterm then I thought so, but I wasn't for sure. I think I probably screwed on the net ionic equation ... |

IP ERIC! I'm here! I couldn't log on last night like I wanted to I'm studying for my midterm right now, I will nap for a couple of hours then study more. See, I'm having the most trouble with Molecular, Ionic, and Net Ionic Equations. Mostly being able to tell them apart for each other.
