Howdy, So Cap Female buddy has been gently nudging me to get back into playing music seriously for a while now, and had me play at a party a couple weeks ago.. jamming with some other guys she knows. Both of the other guys were quite good! Decent guitar playing, and they both have excellent voices.
She would like me to show up again and play with them at a larger party this coming saturday, and for the next couple days I will be practicing some of the acoustic guitar songs I've always played, as well as looking for new stuff. The song doesn't necessarily have to be an acoustic song as performed by the original artist... sometimes it's fun to make it into one. I do that with Desperado by the Eagles with great results, for instance.
So those of you who like some acoustic music... post some suggestions! Either stuff done by the original artist as acoustic, or some stuff that would sound good performed acoustic. (Tesla's 5 man acoustical jam CD was always one of my favorite examples of that).
Post youtube links if possible I'll post a few of stuff I already do. Looking for good suggestions of stuff to learn that I may have overlooked or forgotten about here..and it would be fun to have an acoustic music thread with links anyway.
This one always puts a smile on the drunk ppl's faces...
The original Prince of Rock and Roll Darkness... Johnny Cash, doing an impressive NIN cover:
Love playing this one, a very well written but poorly recorded song by Matchbox 20:
Had a gal request this one last time. Luckily I remembered it well enough to fumble through and pull it off. Great song by the Pure Prairie League - Amie:
Edwin McCain - I'll Be. Used to do this many moons ago, pretty simple:
Rolling Stones - Angie - Most soulful song the Stones ever wrote imho.
This one's always a fun one, easily pulled off on acoustic. Christ Isaak - Baby did a bad bad thing:
..and predictably, within about 5 seconds of finishing that one, somebody asks for this one. I do it too, my voice isn't near as smooth as Isaak's though, he's awesome:
.. and just because it's dead simple to throw in for good measure - Chris Isaak - Heart Shaped World:
one of my favorites, and it usually turns heads because people like it, but don't quite recognize it. One of the Eagles early hits - Doolin' Dalton:
Another of my favorite old songs that translates very well to acoustic, in fact that's the only way I've ever done it. Three Dog Night - Never been to spain:
One of Ian Moore's best, this one translates well to acoustic. Ian Moore - Satisfied:
I love the J. Mascis tune and the Proclaimers... I'd never heard either before. Good stuff! Thanks!
Cake's okay, but the song I really love by them is short skirt, long jacket; and it wouldn't sound right without an electric guitar and a bass. If I knew anybody with a standup double bass I'd try it acoustic... but you've got to have a bass for that song to make all those unison lines with the guitar and bass sound right. It'd sound hokey with guitar alone.
Here's another one I do, by Ian Moore. "Cinnamon" I know waaaay too many sad, minor-key songs, I need to lighten things up a bit. Great songwriting in this one though.
Thanks for the suggestions guys! Please keep them coming! I haven't had a chance to listen to everything yet but I'll get around to it. Some of what I've listened to so far does interest me, and some of it is stuff I used to do and ought to relearn (I used to play a few Tonic songs in the 90s).
As well as some of the stuff I posted earlier, here's some of what we did tonight. It was fun, Cap Female Buddy actually had a friend who has been on American Idol there tonight. I never watch the show, but the guy can sing his ass off, I'll give him that! Another guy who is a great singer, good songwriter, and pretty decent guitar player was there as well, and would like me to record some stuff with him sometime. It was a fun time with a fun crowd and a few good musicians. It's a good way to ease back into playing, and might start becoming more frequent.
Radiohead - Creep: Great song, lots of ppl do it, but hey... still a lot of fun:
John Mellencamp - Pink Houses: any of you guys learning to play, this is dead easy to play and ppl like it. This youtube video even gives you the chords... how cool is that? I learned this song when I was 16 and just starting out, probably one of the first dozen songs I ever knew.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man: Beautiful song. This is Shinedown's version which I actually like quite a bit.
Great White - Wasted Rock Ranger: Another one that's dead easy, if you're learning to play guitar, learn this song! ppl love it and you couldn't ask for anything simpler.
Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs - Little Red Riding Hood: I do it for the pure satisfaction of how perverted the song sounds.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama: Mostly because everybody knows it, good song though.
Posted by 25thDecan Guy here named Tony on Fire has some great stuff. I WOULD do acoustic as a composer and play along with my trombone but people here are completely backwards when it comes to working together and collaborating so all my stuff is electronic. But with the two people I work with we're workin on getting our stage setup and capability TO acoustic. *thumbs up
I love acoustic. There's no room for slop to hide... you have to be good to pull it off. You either bring it, or you suck. For now, I suck... lol... but I can hear improvement every time I pick it up. I'll get it back
I'd LOVE to have some guys who know brass to work with! If I had the right few guys... maybe 2 trumpets, a trombone, a sax... I'd work with that and try to pull off some swing in a heartbeat. Wish you were nearby!

We should have a 1 night only engagement. LOL. CP on guitar, you on trombone, I play the flute...haha.
We could be the worlds most demented Jethro Tull cover band. lol
I'm about to head out... apparently this is becoming a weekly thing every Sunday afternoon now. Here's one I am going to try possibly today, definitely by next week, depends on how well I can fake it today. It's too naughty for me to resist LOL I think I could probably translate this over to acoustic pretty well.
