According to what I read on the net, it's as simple as a matter of price and abundance of hydrogen. Helium is more expensive because less readily available in large quantities.

Not in particular. But what's your question? Maybe I can help.

One could say I "fell into the field by accident". But I've never regretted it for a second.

My father was a Libra... What does the ascendant indicate to you regarding my chosen field?

It's certainly a unique and interesting balance of energy transfer processes, here on Earth.

LOL, yeah, I didn't feel up to scaling the image down, so I just took it as is. Hope it wasn't too much of an eye sore

Indeed, you know as well as I do that here on planet earth it's all about conservation of mass, momentum, and energy. Maybe on some other planet we can do other wild and crazy things.

Have you seen fluid dynamics experiments in space? It's an amazing and fun!!

Hi MoonMan,

Apparently there have been some tests that indicate that multi-junction solar cells have been able to get up to 44% efficiency, which is pretty good:

With regards to wind turbines, we might be able to get to higher efficiencies by studying different shapes and styles of palms to minimize losses.

You make a good point that the efficiency of each of these power sources is limited by thermodynamic losses that are inherent to all forms of real (as opposed to theoretical) work cycles.

Well, speaking as an engineer, my take is the following. Wind and wave (tidal) energy are viable sources of energy. Each have their pluses and minuses from an ecological perspective. But neither are 100% efficient. Max efficiency is between 35 - 45% or so.

Solar energy is somewhat more efficient, but the materials used in the fabrication of panels are not the most eco-friendly. In any and all cases, materials would need to be 100% recyclable for this to be worthwhile.

More research is required to better understand and to develop these and other sources of energy to their fullest potential.

The real road-block however to R&D in clean energy is politics and corporations. Advancement of these technologies is halted for the sake of filling corporate oil and electrical company pockets, not to mention their corresponding shareholders who care more about their bank accounts than about ecology.

If you have further questions, feel free...I'll do my best to answer.

Not in depth. I think if we chose appropriate sources of energy for the need we could maximize the efficency. Seems like all that is considered is affordability and not energy output.
