Visually stunning, with excellent CGI, but a so-so soundtrack. Unfortunately, the story wasn't as coherent as it should have been (especially during the first-half) and the finished product came across as soulless (as is the case with most big-budget productions these days).
Difficult to watch (too dark) or comprehend (mumbled lines) in places, it lacks sufficient emotional impact and mainly serves to set-up the next instalment (provided this first chapter doesn't flop) instead of being a movie in its own right.
It's worth watching but it isn't superior to Lynch's version - it's merely a modern retelling.
