Probably not fighting hard enough to carve-out some kind of career in music.
Back then, there wasn't any internet and I faced so many hurdles just to get started as a musician (and a good mixture of -isms didn't help matters either). Also, anyone who recognised my potential, as a youngster, never bothered pushing me in the right direction.
There was also the odd missed opportunity to get my foot in the door, in the music industry, but I was young and the opportunities were presented to me 'in code'.
Also, I'm a bit of an anomaly - most people who meet me make the wrong assumptions about my music tastes, solely based on my ethnicity, so finding the right music circles has been extremely difficult.
Since then, attitudes have changed a great deal but I'm too weary of people now. Exploring and collecting music in my spare time is where the remnants of my music aspirations now reside.
It's never too late to start something new. Do some gigs on the weekend and look up the right people.
Two friends begun in their 20s and are getting quite big right now. They started abroad instead of their home base. Go for it Gobbie!
