after getting home from the shops to a messy house I was cleaning it when there was a knock at the door. My neighbour's wife had come over...anyway she said that she had something to ask and was feeling awkward. Things rushing through my mind...then she asks if I was going up the road again and I said no. So she says, I need a drink!
I'm standing there not knowing what to say as we have only been neighbours that say hi and bye and nice weather etc, except her husband that chatters non stop and stops you from doing any work outside. The type that you try not to talk to because even if the house is on fire you can't get away from him to put it out!!!! Plus they are Dutch and it's hard to understand what they are saying because of their accent...
I'm like do you want me to go down the road for you, as she said her husband had gone out and she says can I buy a bottle or 2 off you? Was the weirdest thing and I didn't have time to think about it til after she went with 2 bottles in hand and asking me not to tell her husband. She also left $ 30, way too much for the bottles she took!
So after she left and I return to the kitchen to find the money, I start to think about what had just happened. He (Rudy) had told me that they don't drink and that they had heaps of bottles of wine given to them. When they were building their home I had allowed them to freely use my water and power for the workers when they needed it and they tried giving me money. I told them I didn't want their money but I loved wine so if they wanted to get me something just a nice bottle would do. That's when I remember he said that they didn't drink. I always felt conscious when putting the empties out. My partner loves his nightly beers and we really do sound like alchies when putting out the recycle bin
She was explaining herself as to why she felt she needed a drink, problems with the kids splitting up (they are older in their 70's) and I know she is having health problems as Rudy has told me that. I was thinking, she's probably in pain and wanting it as a relief, not that that helps but hey I don't have severe back problems and pain relief is a personal thing.
But the more I thought about it and how she was acting I started thinking...is she an alcoholic, maybe recovering or just isn't allowed to drink for whatever reason! OMG what have I gotten myself into? What happens the next time she comes around. I did say I wouldn't tell her husband! Geez I hate things like this!
