I've heard both... some never really get over a real love and some drop and move on... I moreso hear they move on.

Either way don't need drama so I'd rather it be done.

I think if they are trying to play friends they still want you in their life for ego or backup.

With my Scorpio ex we've done so much in and out the bedroom. Why would you want to be friendly... having an intense relationship, a friendship is a foundation not an alternative.
