Anyone know anything about pecan trees? I have a big one in my new yard.
I know that pecans grow in the winter but is it every winter or every other winter?? Do they die out after so many years?

Good question, I've always Wanted pecan trees too. The only thing I don't like about them is that the branches break easily in high wind. Makes having them over a roof a bad idea.

My advice:

Find out what plants suit the climate you're living in and find out what compost or fertilizer you'll need for those plants.

I was working at a Bed & Breakfast in the Eastern Cape (South Africa) for 3 years, and during the day if business was quiet, I would transplant different flowers and shrubs to try to give the garden a bit of excitement. The climate where I was living was very dry and it hardly ever rained, so it was a mission to get the grass to grow. I used a fertilizer called 2-3-2 for the grass, and a fish emulsion fertilizer for the flowers.

I only once grew flowers from seeds, so I wouldn't be able to give too much info on that.

Awww typical fish, trying to use their creative juices to make everything pretty.
Did that do anything for the grasss. I really need to work on my grass or just straight up put rocks over it?

Well with the grass, I took a garden fork and made holes in the soil, then I sprinkled that 2-3-2 all over the grass, and then put the sprinkler on for a few hours per day.

This is all very useful info. Thank you.
I’ll start off with something potted, that’ll be nice.
I hear it gets cold in Michigan, does that effect your plants growth at all?

You are most welcome! It was my pleasure. Talking about it is therapeutic...let alone actually doing it. My Taurus rising loves digging around in dirt!

As far as the climate and temperatures goes... it really depends which part of Michigan we are talking about. More inland you go, milder it gets and it m a y be possible to grow less winter resilient plant (with a primary focus on perennials here).

I, on the other hand, live literally 15 minutes walk from the shore so when those cold winds from Canada blow across the open waters, it gets bitingly cold which is why I chose majority of my perennials to be either native to Michigan or otherwise very hardy variety.

You’ll also will have to be mindful of the location of plants in your garden... meaning shade vs full sun etc but I’m sure I’m stating the obvious here! ;p

I have a small garden, i grow herbs....lavender, rosemary, lemon balm, parsley etc and some flowers in pots. It's important to chop the herbs back to half their size in the winter to promote new growth

Lavender gives me life 💜

Oh me too ma'am....i never get colds or flu because as soon as i feel a sore throat coming on i rub neat lavender oil into my throat and chest and it stops virus from developing

*Magical* stuff, i swear

What do you use it for ?

Awww that’s great I didn’t know it had healing powers too! 😊
I’m in love with the smell I like lavandef scented candles, dish soap, trash bags, you name it. That and lemon are my two favorite scents. How about you?

Yes very healing . When i was training to be an aromatherapist we were told about a man who had burned his hand in a lab and there was a big vat of lavender oil....he plunged his hand in and the skin healed very quickly

I love lemon too and melissa, chamomile, basil, sandalwood, clary sage and lots more

That is so amazing!!! So much to learn so little time. I’m so busy with my studies and can think of three other things I also want to study up on.

Aromas have more healing power than people think!
For example when I was giving birth my contractions were so strong I wanted to throw up. My cousin(a nurse) handed me a cup of lemon peals and told me to hold it under my nose, as I was smelling it my nausea completely stopped, it was the most amazing thing.
