Yes but you give them bones so that they maintain their teeth cleaned

I'm on my way to picking him up. They wanted to keep them longer for observation. I guess we'll give me the info to what to look for for the next few days

The good thing is that I called my vet which is an hour away from me and they provide the dental cleaning without putting them down as long as they've had one major one and it's done every six months. I'm never doing this again

Have a major migraine me and him are going to be cuddling up in bed
  • Okay dear, get the terminology right-

    "Putting under" means anesthesia.

    "Putting down" means euthanasia.

In regard to the situation, you need to ask why he almost died from anesthesia because it begs the question, how much were they giving him that he almost died?

I was a vet tech for years. butter happens. Your dog had butterty teeth. Probably hereditary. I had a cat who had awful teeth had to take him to a special animal dentist. Have another cat she's about 14, think I've cleaned her teeth once. Vet always looks at them and say she has beautiful teeth.

As far as the anesthesia goes.... it's a risk like any other surgery. Surprised they even told you about the whole thing. Most vets wouldn't even tell you if there was a problem so long as the dog was alive.

There is always a risk with anesthesia. That's why a lot of folks don't brush their animals teeth that way. Just get him dentabones or whatever.

I was thinking this, too. Really weird that they called to notify her of this. It's one thing, after the fact, when everything is fine- "we hit a rough patch but pulled him out of it so yay. He's recovering well and all is good. Here's post op care and precautions. See you next time." But to be like, "OMG HE JUST ALMOST DIED. WE WANTED TO CALL AND LET YOU KNOW BUT HE RECOVERED."

    ...okay? Dafuq?

Typically they put dogs under for teeth cleaning.
I work in dental (humans) & it's possible to die from being put under for a # of reasons.
I'm more concerned why the tooth needed to be extracted.
My dogs passed @ 12 &17 & they had all their teeth. I brushed them once a month & am against the dental sticks.

I've had several dogs - no teeth cleaning or fixing needed ever - had them on a good dog food and bones - real bones, not dental sticks - my vet never even asked me about doing their teeth - he did ask what I did for their teeth because they looked large and white and absolutely beautiful - I said nothing - he thought I brushed them and I laughed - nope, just good food and bones - I used to give them frozen bones in the summer actually - they love um and had killer teeth!
