Okay. I'm going to answer your questions and comment on your statements from to your original post.

    行こう! Lets begin!

People who tranistion into the opposite gender has really been on my mind latelty.

I'm sure it has! The ideas around gender and gender roles are currently being redefined by society and due to the media (such as easy access to internet) this topic is being spoken about world wide because we're more connected on a global scale. This world is comprised of multiple cultures and all cultures assign the genders that they acknowledge certain roles in the community. Many cultures acknowledge two genders (masculine and feminine) while others acknowledge many more! Currently, the idea of a "two gender society" is being questioned; ushering in a new wave of self acceptance and growth.

Idk why you would want to be another gender?

First, lets define "gender". You may have heard the term "gender fluidity" around lately because gender is on a spectrum. Ones gender includes external and internal factors. Gender can be expressed by the clothes you wear, the mannerisms you take on, and even how you may wear your hair. Someones "gender identity" is held within the brain and is on a spectrum of woman-ness or male-ness. Someone can have any combination of either gender. Or not! Sometimes these folks define themselves as Queer, Gender Queer, or Gender Nonconforming.

This can change based off situations:

(You act more masculine at work because you're the boss and want to be respected)

    How you feel that day:

(It's a lovely day outside and you've decided to wear a dress because who doesn't like a nice breeze?)

Gender can be a complicated subject, but it's okay! Focus on your own gender expression and identity and let others do the same. Huzzah! Big Grin

I dont believe that being female and male have strict guidelines when it comes to how you should act or dress...

    Schweet! That's fantastic!

...but to completely try and change your entire gender with surgery???

But... Are they reeeeally changing their gender with surgery?

Now that we know what "gender" means, lets look at the differences between SEX and GENDER

Ones biological sex is determined during fetal development. Most folks assume that there is only female (vulva with ovaries) or male (penis with testis) sex organs... Well guess what! That's not entirely true! A majority of infants are born with "ambiguous" genitalia, meaning that a little "girl" may be born with a non-abnormal labia, and vaginal canal, but their clitoris resembles a small penis so instead of hiding behind the labia it sticks out. Or, how about a little "boy" that was born with a penis and testis, but between the two sex organs there's an opening; instead of the urethra being within the penis for peeing, it's found inside of the opening between the penis and the testis. Outside of their ambiguous sex organs, these two infants are completely healthy! Lovely, right?

So, when someone who is experiencing gender dysphoria (which is determined by a psychiatrist over a looong period of time and therapy, not just a change of sex on your Facebook page.) this person feels deeply, in their heart of hearts, that their body (be it sex organs or not) just isn't working for them.

This is a terrifying feeling. Many transgender folks (my sibling included) fought to love the bodies they were born into! NO ONE wants to be different if it impedes their life! That this why the DSM-5 uses the term gender dysphoria to convey the distress that is felt due to the person having multiple conflicts within their life due to cultural or societal issues.

Sex reassignment surgery is expensive and, in a way, still experimental! Many folks decide on taking hormones instead to gain what is know as "secondary sex characteristics", such as a deeper voice, fatty deposits on the breast, gaining or losing body hair. Most of the time these characteristics lessen the anxiety of a transperson and allows them to "pass" as their preferred gender.

    /steps off soap box

I hope this helps and that I've answered your questions! My initial offer is still open. I'm happy to chat. Below is a nifty picture that I've been shown in class (Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies courses) that does a really good job of taking what I just said and putting it in art form. Do take a look! It covers more than just gender and sex identity.
