Heights. I get extreme vertigo. I can’t ride up tall escalators because I fear I’d get dizzy and fall backwards, however for some reason going down is not an issue.

I used to be terribly afraid of heights as well. I eventually got over it because I ended up getting a previous job where I’d climb electrical poles and do work on it. It was terrifying, but every day after going up over and over, I got used to it. Now, my current field, I walk up 50 feet catwalks everyday and you can see the bottom because it’s all steel grates and not closed flooring. It also wiggles 😬

Fight your fear with fear! Get on the DropZone ride!

Did you get protection gear when going up the electrical poles?

I’ve actually mustered courage and gone on a dropzone ride before. I was reciting prayers when I was all the way up there and literally went cold lol. It really helps when I have someone doing the rides with me. I only have one brother and hate when he doesn’t want to do the scary rides with me! And now I have a husband who’s the same! Ugh, it’s like they enable my fear more you know?

Omg lol I’m laughing at the part of your brother and husband who doesn’t help because they are scared too.

Absolutely, I did receive gear. It’s protocol! OSHA standards. It was simple things like 3 point contact, we all received a heavy duty leather waist belt that had iron rings. On the iron rings, you attach a lanyard, which is a heavy duty belt that wraps around the pole to hold you up. They are heavy so imagine a belt on you with a loop in front of you. However, you can’t fully use it while you are climbing, so when you climb, you are free climbing with the pegs on the pole and must absolutely take care.

There is the exception with a technique called gaffing. You attach spikes to your lineman boots, wrap your lanyard around the pole and do a technique to climb. Basically use the spikes to climb while using the lanyard and whipping it up. If you bend both knees, you will fall down. Youtube “gaffing a pole” for a free cheap thrill lol
