the ring was a good american horror movie, I didn't like the japanese remake though. Too slow.
I didn't know they have a Japanese version. I gotta check that one out. I only know they made the Japanese version for the grudge.

You guys are killing me here... The Ring was the first American
remake of a Japanese horror classic, and started the J-horror trend (which included the Grudge and Shutter).
Like others before me, I love horror, but it has really sucked for a long time. I haven't been scared by a movie since... shoot, the early 2000s? It's like they all want to be the Walking Dead: slow, boring, dramatic, with the tiniest hint or horror every once in a blue moon. The ones that haven't followed that path are either "found footage" or just comedy with a horror theme.
I second
The Descent, it's an awesome scary movie, albeit older.
I also liked the
Halloween remake, and although I might be the only one, I liked the
Evil Dead remake (and I loved the original Evil Dead!).
Although it's not really a horror,
47 Meters Down is a good drama thriller.

Contracted on Netflix, it's an instant-classic, too
