I think it comes down to the type of person you are. I have always had guy friends growing up and was the "one of the boys" type. No touching or flitting and if they tried any shading butter, i put them in their place rather than entertaining it or being flattered. It's like brother/sister relationships that comes with a different level of respect to my female friends and is more serious. So with guys it's more deeper conversations about life and struggle. The jokes are about funny things that happened and are never sexual. The conversations don't include we or us, it's 2 separate lives with separate friends that aren't entwined. But these are guys I grew up with so it's probably different.
With exes, you can stay friends until one of you meets someone new, then i think you need to cut the cord and become the past.
I think you've brought up some really great points, and I completely agree with most of it. A nice, passing praise just
feels different from something that is obviously meant to flatter you it just then you start to wonder if they're making a pass at you.
But like you said, it depends what kind of person you are. Because obviously there are people who keeps "friends" of the opposite sex as means to get constant attention and enjoy those blurry boundaries and the sexual tension.
