Why do people think rap and Hip-Hop are the same thing? And how did all this butterty ass rap thats been coming out for years become classified as Hip-Hop? Any thoughts on this?

because most ppl don't investigate it on more than a surface level. it seems that most ppl get their music from tv (which isn't music but look, production, and entertainment). i kind of like the fact that real hip hop (and other music i like) isn't too mainstream..it doesn't get too played out and diluted and allows me to see who can tell the difference and who can not

Hip Hop is a culture.

Rap is a sub-genre of Hip Hop, as is R&B, etc.

I'm sorry, but I think the younger generation misclassifies the hip/hop-rap, unless they are true music heads. I'm not hating, but I've noticed that youngbucks don't even know who the groundbreakers were...infact, they don't know much about rap before DJ Jazzy Jeff &the Fresh Prince! Lmmfao, sure they've HEARD of Krs-1, Eric B.&Rakim, Gangstarr,...but they actually haven't even listened to them. A friend of mine asked me to put some songs on his ipod before he went away, and I put some old school on it and he was like "who was that..blah, blah blah" and I just looked at him and was like "how can you even listen to rap and NOT know Eric B. and Rakim? Microphone Fiend...the beat that was meant for battles?":O

yeah hit on the head with Rakim..i know what you're saying seavixen. i always ask ppl who say they're into the music if they know who Big L is? it's funny that most don't. How can you say you know the music and not know someone who some ppl say is the most talented mc ever and a lot of times is in ppl's top ten. Gangstarr dedicated THEIR greatest hits album to him. that's just one example. That's what i was saying in the last line of my first post..you appreciate it when someone does.

ms. p..i like lil wayne (i have 500 songs of his on my ipod amongst 8000 or so rap/hip hop tunes) but not one of my top mc's. i like the lyrics and some of the beats but the voice and style don't do it for me

Skip to 1:37 to Waynes verse. He said "hospital full, sick of my flow, hip hop was washed up so I bought some change to finish my load. I load millions and more millions, money to the ceiling, ngga no ceiling! " haha

"but not one of my top mc's. i like the lyrics and some of the beats but the voice and style don't do it for me"

I wouldn't quite say hes made my top 5 yet, but hes well on his way. His consistency is amazing..almost untouched. That, to me, is the true test of an MC. His flow is also sick, altho granted, sometimes a little annoying.
