And despite what many say, there is always a demand for those fields. I am yet to meet an unemployed Pharmacist. But I have met plenty of unemployed history majors. Philosophy is actually a lucrative field. A lot of technology companies employ them.

majoring in history would open opportunities for philosophy tho right? lucrative huh? well thats re-assuring. although people who work in porn make more money than philosophers.

Westside, on average, those who have a college degree earn almost twice as much as those who do not. The title of your degree may just be looked upon as just that, a title, as opposed to something your pigeon holed into - it shows that you have initiative and drive. With a degree you will, in general, be favored over that of a high school grad regardless of position. Here's some figures for you to ponder...

Education Avg. Income Increase
Drop-out $ 20,873 —
High school $ 31,071 48.9%
College $ 56,788 82.8%
Advanced $ 82,320 45.0%

Another advantage of going to college is figuring out what (other) subjects spark interest (and those you totally abhor). Having a career you enjoy is far more gratifying than one in which you simply make a lot of money - my point, look at what you want to do, not on the money aspect, once you find something you enjoy then you can focus on how to make it work to your advantage to earn the income you desire.
