hmmmmmm...a food parcel perhaps?

Actually not such a bad idea - when they have a newborn they probably won't be able to leave the house for 2 years.

Baby on the Way Package

Baby lotion/wipes
condoms
pacifiers (I see them spat out all over the sidewalks so they must get thru quite a few of them)
Bibs (those napkin things that tie around their necks to catch spillage)
voucher for a massage or dinner

Something hand made if you can swing it. A quilt for baby made of cotton and soft things. Or simply things that will be useful for baby. Cotton onesies or diapers ( which also double as excellent burp/spit up cloths ). Things they might not think of, a basket with simethicone, baby Tylenol for after shots or fever for baby, diaper rash cream ( Little Bottoms or similar, something natural ). Wee nail trimmers, a nasal aspirator. Lotion sans perfume or irritants. Baby bath soap. Cornstarch in a pretty antique shaker bottle. ( So much cheaper than baby powder and it works well. ) Baby chest rub..smells of rosemary. A lovey to set on the dresser for a time with a hand sewn face. Not a choking hazard when baby is ready for it. One of those plaster kits for pressing baby hands and feet in. And believe it or not, tuck in a bottle of Ivory Snow or Dreft detergent.

!CASH!

for children, i hate the idea of friends/fam giving a child toys and shit. it's stupid. parents can handle the BS so why does a child need additional plastic garbage that will ultimately be destroyed and forgotten?

for infants and toddlers, i can see buying necessities...pampers/pull-ups but beyond that, it seems like a bunch of wasted money to me. ie, why BUY onesies? they'll get a shit load of them. give the parent the option of buying what the child NEEDS instead of 20 people buying the exact same thing.

!MONEY! is AWESOME when it comes to gifting parents/children. i would suggest to your friend that they start a college fund for their child and that he requests that any gifts be in monetary form. they should let friends/fam know that he would prefer this instead of stupid gifts that will be forgotten.

ie for christmas and bdays, my bro has each person sign a piece of decorative paper and places it into a jar that's in my nephew's room. the paper is like a "receipt" for funds received. it lists the amount given and a message to my nephew that is written by the giver. my bro is of course responsible so he puts this money away for his son and not for personal use.

where my nephew doesn't understand it now, when he goes to college, he will be able visually see and read these messages of love and support...and he can pay for college. where it may seem like an impersonal gift, if requested and presented in the "right" way, most friends/fam won't mind getting a money order because no matter how small, the gift will add up.

guess who's idea this was? THIS taurus is practical. at the end of the day, you wanna gift me? !CASH! speaks volumes.

that's not to say that i dont enjoy a bouquet of flowers or something sparkly on occasion, but if you're talking about gifting something in regard to something that is important to me and is a financial obligation, CASH and a plan touches makes me feel like you're in my corner and willing me forward.

Erm, you'd be amazed how many changes of clothing a baby goes through in a day. When they're not shitting on something they're throwing up on it. I used every one of the 500 onesies I received.
And having everything around you instead of zipping out to buy something...one doesn't truly feel up to the ol' shopping trip after you've given birth. You're flat out shattered. Wonder you can scratch your watch or wind your ass.
