Allen carr's techniques focuses on the fact that the physcial craving isn't as bad as it's made out to be but is strengthened by the psychological imporatnce and is attached to it. So he talks you through what it is that hooks a person to cigarettes and then guides you through the physical and mental process of giving up. You guys should try reading it before dismissing the technique outta hand.
Well Allen Carr does a good job of breaking down into little piece what it is that makes people addicted to cigs and it's something like 30% physical and 70% psychological (I'm not sure of the exact percentages).
Elly, Good Luck with it. I don't smoke; never have, but I've heard how hard it is and I give you props for wanting to quit.
My cousin stopped smoking cold turkey because his wife pleaded with him to stop for his health. Everytime he craved a cigarette or food, he'd either go work out or had sex with his wife (that was her idea)...of course, now they have 4 kids.
I've quit a total of 4 times.. 3 times in early pregnancy, which was easy for me because the smell made me sick.. And once about a year and a half ago, which lasted until Jan of this year at which time I started back.. I think the combination of weight gain and still mentally wanting a "smoke" finally broke and I gave in (very guiltily).
I think the hardest for me was having to change all of my regular habits, like going outside after dinner, in the morning. etc.. There are certain activities I've always associated with smoking (like driving) and thats the hardest to break.
I told myself when I started back in Jan. that after I had lost the weight I would try quitting again. Now I'm procrastinating. I lost the weight I gained with my last attempt plus a few more. Now I'm ought weight to lose...
COLD TURKEY does NOT work for hard core smokers. I was able to quit with the patch last time, which I'll prolly use this time as well, but I think I need to change my routine to make it through the first year. I was also thinking about hypnotism...
"I didn't smoke while pregnant, PERIOD. But I also was never a regular smoker. Sometimes a week would go by, other times it'd be every day, but maybe only once or twice."
That reminds me that in Allen Carr's book (I should be his publicist) he mentions there are 2 categories of smokers: the ones who smoke consistently 5,10,50 cigs a day and then the ones who are more sporadic smokers and do it now and then but they still don't give up. He said the latter group are addicted more psychologically to the act of smoking and are perhaps a little trickier to get them to stop but his technique works for all if it is accepted, trusted and followed. Allen Carr himself was smoking 100 fags a day until he devised his method for giving up so he was a good case study!
Cigarettes are commonly referred to as fags over in Ireland and the UK!!! fags are also gys men but I think that term is kinda dying out a bit isn't it? Cos the world is more PC these days or supposed to be anyway.
Fagotini in Italian also mean little sticks and are used in food dishes to describe little sticks of bread or meat or whatever. American English is just one dialect of the english language remember that!!
