What do I do??

So, I'm an Aries female and I became very close to an Aquarius man online. Things got quite deep intellectually and emotionally, and when we met sparks flew! We spent a whole weekend together, out and about aswell as at home.
Then, he went cold. He later informed me that he had received messages from his crazy ex threatening self harm and blaming him the same day he stopped contact with me. He explained that after dealing with that he just couldn't and can't stomach another relationship.
I know for a fact she was acting crazy so I believe he was telling the truth.
My question is... Now that I know this, does that mean that things will never take off with us? Should I give up? We still have the banter, but it just seems less emotional like there is a wall....

Of course there will always be but it's up to you guys if meant to be.
