Elvis shares my mom b-day, both day and year. Hard to believe that if he was still with us he'd be the same age as her! I too love his music and try to get my hands on any remakes of his songs. I have a fantastic collection by him to date. I'm just sorry I wasn't old enough to be around when he was musically performing at his peak to see him "Live". I was definitely born to late IMO! A greater performer can never exist. He truly was "King"!

I'm so glad so many others agree with me about Elvis!

I should have clarified that I am also too young to have EVER been alive when he was alive, but his cheesy movies— Can't get enough of 'em, particularly Blue Hawaii. And I am also working on my collection of Elvis music--HEY, has anyone heard that ever so cool remix of "A Little Less Conversation"? It's pretty new on the radio/VH1 a lot, it's by "Elvis vs. JXL" (I guess that's the DJ who remixed it, JXL)...anyway it's cool!

Best R&B- hahahahahahaha that is a joke. Elvis may have been a cap but he sure as hell was no king of R&B. He simply emulated the originals of R&B(and it worked) if you really know anything about him he openlly admitted to that. He made it acceptable for a white man to break into R&B. But I will give him some credit on that Blue Suede Shoes Doo-Op he did and props for being the freaky cap I always thought he was.

Not an Elvis fan- but he was fine!

4 198=105. You are so right. Elvis was not the king for R&B! As a matter of fact he was not even a thought in the cosmos when RnB was created! RnB was around a LOOOONG time before Elvis even came on to the scene. And you're so right he more than admitted to the fact the he WAS NOT the orignator of R&B. I think IMO that he's given credit for it is the fact that due to the fact that R&B actually belongs to the African American musician (and no one can dispute this BTW) at that point in history it WAS NOT acceptable to give credit for ANYTHING to an African-American person let alone music. So therefore Elvis got credit for R&B which rightfully didn't belong to him but even he knew this but there was nothing he could do about it but he in turn did give credit where it rightfully did belong. He would definitely not have gotten where he had gotten to if not for the other cultures before him! I'm just sorry that they did not have the "ways and means" the Elvis did to get them to the same place like him! If the R&B singers had been white it would have been a whole different music world IMO, and perhaps music would definitely hold a different history??

I don't know, rasicm definitely is an unfortunately dark, powerful factor when we go back in time (pre-Elvis). But at the same time, there were black musicians who were very successful. Maybe people just really liked Elvis's style and it didn't have as much to do with race (especially after the 60's) as it seems. Elvis WAS an original performer--you can't point to people before him who had his same sense of performance and style . He WAS a trailblazer in many ways. I believe he was far less a follower than a leader.

And look at how successful R&B and Rap are today. Maybe rather than looking at Elvis being white as a setback to black music, we can see the fact that he broadened the audience for traditional black music.

Maybe, when it comes right down to it, people just liked his music!
