A company founded by a religious group that believes humans were created by extraterrestrials said Friday that it has created the first human clone -- a 7-pound baby girl it dubbed "Eve."
"I am very pleased to announce that the first baby clone is born," said Brigitte Boisselier, the CEO of Clonaid and a bishop in the group, called the Raelians. "She was born yesterday at 11:55 a.m. in the country where she was born. She is fine."
Boisselier refused to disclose where Eve was born but did reveal that the mother is a 31-year-old American citizen. She said Eve was created using DNA from the mother's skin cells and is a twin of her mother.
In an exclusive interview with CNN after the announcement, Boisselier said advances in the field of human in-vitro fertilization and cow cloning added to her success.
"We have experts with 24 years of experience in the reproduction of humans and benefited from that.... (and also from) the work that has been done on cow cloning, of course," Boisselier said. "My expert, the one technician that did the embryo, did more than 3,000 cow embryos before touching any human eggs."
At the news conference, Boisselier said four other cloned babies are expected to be born by February.
Boisselier offered no immediate proof of her claim -- or photographs of the baby. She said the baby is healthy, and that the family is "very happy."
She said that she is allowing a freelance journalist to verify her claim. To that end, freelance journalist and physicist Dr. Michael Guillen has picked a panel of independent experts to investigate.
"I have accepted on two conditions: that the invitation be given with no strings attached whatsoever and that the tests be conducted by a group of independent world-class experts," Guillen said.
The experts will begin their tests in a few days when Eve returns home, Boisselier said. Results of the tests are expected in eight to nine days.
Clonaid, which calls itself the "first human cloning company," was founded by the Raelians in 1997. The Raelian movement professes that life on Earth was created through genetic engineering by extraterrestrials.
The Raelians believe the Raelian Movement Leader -- former French journalist Claude Vorilhon who now calls himself Rael -- is a direct descendant of these aliens. He says he has met with aliens and visited their planet. Rael told CNN in July 2001 that the long-term goal for human cloning is to live forever.
Rael says the Raelians eventually want to learn how to clone an adult and then "transfer the brain to the clone." Boisselier said she hopes to one day open cloning clinics on each continent to help infertile couples have families.
The Christian Coalition, in a press release, called baby Eve an "aberration" and said they will push the 108th Congress to ban human cloning in the United States.
"The cloning of human embryos for the purpose of performing destructive research and experimentation, such as that which just occurred today of 'Baby Eve,' is an aberration. It shows a total lack of respect for life and must be prevented," said Roberta Combs, president of the Christian Coalition of America.
To make a clone, scientists first take an egg and remove all of its genetic material. Then the nucleus of a cell -- any cell in the body -- is taken from the individual to be cloned and inserted into the hollowed-out egg.
The cell is then given a jolt of electricity or put in a chemical bath to activate cell division -- essentially tricking the cell into doing what a fertilized egg would normally do. Then the embryo is implanted into a woman's uterus who carries the baby to term.
Boisselier said Clonaid used this procedure of electricity to activate cell division for Eve.
At the conference, Boisselier defended human cloning, saying she is giv
I hav mixed feelings on this. I am scared this could lead to a very psychotic world for us. There really won't be anything natural left. I can just see the future with twins everywhere and maybe humanized robots like that movie Artificial Intelligence. However, for saving peoples lives with terminal illnesses, I see it as a great reward. It will be interesting to see how this turns out!
I'm really more worried about the creation of a Gattica world... I mean, if it got to the point where the only thing people judge you by is your DNA, it goes just a little too far. You know, cloning is just really weird. That poor child will never live a normal life. She'll be a test subject. The doctor said she did to give the woman a child when she because she didn't have one, but do you really think that the fist cloned human won't be watched like a big experiment to see what will happen, how she'll turn out, if their's any flaws in the cloning process? I really feal bad for Eve.
I think the facts here in this article are way way off the truth of the circumstances.
That 'religion' is involved, sounds like a hoax to me...rather fantastical. WE had the same report in our newspaper here in Australia.
I believe the cloning of humans is happening (it has been banned in Australia)throughout the world. It would be interesting, if nothing else, to see the progess of these infants..will they be EXACTLY the same in personality, intellegence etc...an EXACT clone, or will they be proper individuals (As I believe) with their own life path. This may prove other things, eg, that astrology plays a part in determining character traits, that the 'soul' or 'consciousness' are separate from the physical being, etc..etc..
BUT, cloning for body parts is a huge NO NO....b/c like it or not, these infants ARE PEOPLE..and as such, have human rights that are afforded them by the International Covenant on Human and Political Rights, and therefore cannot legally be harvested.
One last thing, I hope these kids arent put under a microscope for their entire lives, and have the chance to lead a normal life...if that's even possible.
Lawgoddess, I love to read your opinions! The wisdom of your soul shines brightly! You always present in a practical, unpretentious, down-to-earth manner. You display confidence, yet, you are not in any way conceited. You are compassionate and much of what you say rings a vibration that is needed amongst the collective soul. I am very grateful for that and feel the need to thank you personally....
How do I explain this without without seeming like the weirdest person on the planet— There is a different feel on this astrology board site (for me)...many times, I feel an incredible amount of energy...good energy (positive energy)..sometimes the negativity overwhelms me...
I become impelled to respond and feel inspired at times...the more inspired I feel, the faster I type, and, the less I do a spell check or a did-I-make-sense-check!! LOL!
(I suppose this is a disclaimer of sorts regarding my posts and what I say! LOL!)
I know that emotionally, for me, at this time, Venus is f**king with me! Aquarians (at least those with Capricorn Rising and a Gemini Moon), resent this interfence with our aloof, seemingly-in-control, personna!!
It is not like I am possessed or anything...OK, well, maybe I am...but, if I am, it is a friendly ghost! (So, would this like come from my Scotish/Irish heritage??)...
I need a tarot card reading! Where is Cortica when I need her??
Hmmm... What define's a person's personality has little to do with a person's genes and mostly to do with a person's life experiences. That's what's wrong with all those science fiction stories about the cloning of people to bring them back. It's a new person, with a new life. You can clone the body, but you can't clone the memories, or least not yet... That would be very scary of you could, sort of a Sixth Day meats Dark City... What a wierd world we live in... It's only going to get weirder.
Wow Star. Thanx for those kind words. I really like everyone here...I think we are a diverse range of ppl all with valid opinions and perspectives. This site sometimes is thought provoking, which is always a great thing. A big thankyou should go to DXnet, who brought us all together and has allowed us the freedom to openly discuss what can sometimes be controversial topics.
Inspiration is always a good thing...I too, get inspired by reading posts here, and sometimes get so frustrated by other posts...but all is good.
Cortica is in the process of moving house. She has been through some sad times lately (lost her mamma dog and one of her pups) I will definetely pass on your message to her (re: tarot reading) and I am sure she will oblige when she has time to do so. The family will be taking off soon (today) to see her and hang out abit.
Star, I believe you are an incredible person who is ALSO ALL the things (and more) that you have said about me. I think you are a fabulous mum and that your openness with your daughter will only grow stronger and closer b/c of this. She is lucky to have you and I am sure she will excel at anything she does b/c of the lessons you have taught her.
Have a great New Year...and that goes to everyone here!
ok so basically this "rael" guy is saying we were created by aliens but the funny thing is, is that he says we misinterpreted the ways of the "bible" or any other religious preeches/stories/yada yada DA. It says that we mistook them as "Gods" when theyre just merely like US people but more tiny like frickin mini me's running around. About 4 feet. *cough* anyway, they are supposedly scientists in another planet and discovered how to create life, thus they wanted to experiment and "make life" but the government they had over there had strict rules and didnt allow such things on their planet, so these mini me scientists searched for vacant planets and found EARTH.
So they created all these life forms such as plants, animals, and blah blah to make an equal balance which we call today, "The cycle of life". Then they started getting more curious and decided to make human life forms in their own image(sound familiar? look in the bible dear.) so! they made humans in their image and they supposedly "love" us like their own children(sound familiar again).. It also says that in the hebrew bible that in the beginning it started off with some s**t about elohim which means something from the sky, and thus that is the name of their government(pretty tripp ne?) and it also says that they sent prophets down to earth such as jesus, ghandi, moses, etc etc. To teach us since they left us ignorant and naive. So basically we were created from DNA and such from their labratory.
This rael guys says that he met with these "aliens" and they took him to the four corners of the earth to explain what happened in the begining, etc etc. He also claimed that in the bible it says that in the end you can spend eternal life with god, well i guess that was "Twisted" around like what rael says. Because nowadays, scientists are doing that whole cloneing butter, and it says that they can make humans have eternal life by making a clone of themselves and transferring their memory and stuff into that cloned body which will "deliver" eternal life. And that is said in the bible. About the eternal life thinger..
People claim this as a cult, most likely it is, but isnt your religion somehow a cult also? This is trippy... i was curious and i researched over this, so sue me -_-. Blah blah!! bored, going to go read or watch tv or talk on the phone, online, fweh latez!
and somehow i feel like this could be hoax also, because the rael dude says that if they make enough money, theyre going to make an embassy to welcome the aliens and you ask, why cant the aliens just make their own f*kin embassy, well they want us to make it to make sure that they are welcome since you know if they just landed, the world would be in hysteria. Anyway, basically 50 thousands or more are in this right now, which is just krazy. But its weird how this rael guy is a race car driver, and that butter is pretty expensive to maintain.. so where does the money go hm?
yeah thats what ive been wondering, but you know...maybe the aliens dont even know themselves! maybe theyre just like us, except have more knowledge about..scientific butter. But who knows, this could be all be a hoax..and if its not, then o_O
I have to honestly say that I am not against cloning. I am not particularly for it either though. (If this story is true and not a hoax) I hope that the baby Eve and her mother/twin is not found by reporters who expose them and torment them... Eve should have a normal life as should the mother. I understand why some people would want artificial/cloned children and I am not adverse to that. Like Morgan, I fear a Gattica world in which a person's DNA tells everything about them. Also, it is the environment that I think accounts for most of the personality differences.
Lawgoddess- the way you say it, I agree with you against cloning for parts. But I don't belive that is how it is going to be. Taking a cell, scientists can regrow the parts individually without needing the whole person. Therefore, they clone a liver or an ear. I am for this but I know that it will just lead to the rich who can afford the treatment to live longer healthier lives while to poor are (as always) left behind.
PS. If we can clone ears on rats then can't we clone wings on pigs...?
