I've never dabbled in it myself way too much of a scaredy cat to touch that stuff. Plus I've heard some real "horror" stories from people who have.
The whole possession thing scares the shit out of me. I've had those "lucid" type dreams where it feels like you're awake but can't move or speak.
I saw a spiritualist/psychic once years ago who told me spirits were attracted to me because they knew I could "feel" them or something. She said I had 4 around me at that point and that all but one were harmless. She said one was the spirit of a man who had been evil during his lifetime and still was. She said "he knows you know he's there and he's trying to get your attention" she then spoke about times I'd thought I could hear someone saying my name or blowing in my ear and that it was him.
It was funny because at that time I remember always having the feeling I was being watched. That I wasn't quite alone, even when I was.
She'd told me that I had to acknowledge "him" and tell him clearly and loudly that I knew he was there, that I wasn't afraid of him, and that I wanted him to leave.
I felt a bit silly doing that but after a few weeks of being completely freaked the hell out I found myself walking about my flat shouting just what she'd told me to.
Looking back now the whole thing was just weird. But to this day I've never forgotten how creeped out I was by it all.
I've experienced similar to what you describe with my grandfather. He passed when I was 5 and, as wrong as it may be to have favourites I was his. He had been ill for a while and was in hospital. One day when we were heading up to see him I had apparently said to my mum "why are we going to the hospital mummy Grandpa's not there anymore" and my mum just thought I was being silly. We arrived literally just before he had taken his last breath.
My mum only ever told me about this much later. She said that for months after when I stayed at my Gran's house that I would say I couldn't sleep because I could hear him snoring in the room next door.
Had lots of experiences like that.
Probably the biggest thing I get, still to this day, is getting a "feeling" about a place. Like I can sense if bad shit has happened there. It's such a strong feeling I've felt almost physically sick.
