i realize that this can be quite a controversial topic, but i would like to *try* to keep the discussion on this open, honest, & rational........if possible.....

& in addition to the question the topic asks,
for those who have considered an open relationship,
what caused you to begin considering it?
did you bring it up or did your partner?
did you try it?
if so, how has it worked out?

for those who have not, can you ever picture yourself having the desire to try it? would you ever consider it? why or why not?

Although I can understand the mindset some people have that variety is good & that being with only 1 person forever may not be ideal or the most possible thing to do. HOWEVER, I'm old-fashioned.

Yes, I know that no 1 person can fulfill 100% of their parnters needs, BUT what ever happend to self-control/discipline or the ability to control/tweak certain urges? Making love to someone/being sexual with someone is the ONE thing that makes a relationship unique. The other things we all get out of relationships can be provided by our friends/family/ourselves. BUT if I can't even be committed to doing the ONE thing that makes our relationship unique, with my partner then I was better off single.

I don't believe that under ANY circumstances should a person go OUTSIDE of their relationship to fix the problems or urges INSIDE of their relationship. If you take out enough time to THOROUGHLY get to know someone, you'd eventually end up knowing the things/needs they can't fulfill for you. And if those needs are THAT important that you'd feel entitled to stepping outside of the relationship, then that person either isn't right for you OR you need to find someone who CAN fulfil the needs that you feel are make/break to you being faithful or not.

It's no secret that SOME open relationships actually work, BUT the reason alot of them DON'T work is b/c of the unrealistic expectations. Simply just wanting your cake & eating it too is NOT a good enough reason to engage in an open relationship b/c that mindset stems from selfishness/greediness. BOTH people would have to be 100% ok with having an open relationship AND they'd BOTH have to know what it takes AND be willing to do what it takes to keep the relationship afloat. There would def. have to be limits/boundaries (rules).

I think open relationships is just 2 FANCY WORDS for "Justifiable cheating." And I'm with Dr. Phil on this one: You can't make sense out of nonsense

If you can't just be with 1 person for a long time & if you can't ever learn to compromise/sacrifice AND accept that your partner may not be able to be 100% of everything for/to you, then you shouldn't be in a relationship at all. After all, nowadays people get the SAME benefits while "just friends" or "friends with benefits" the same way they would/could if they were actually in a relationship.

Being with more than 1 person at a time DEFEATS the purpose of a relationship. If you can't be with just 1 person, then DON'T commit!

I have never been in a relationship and felt the urge to cheat purley for the sex, so to me an open relationship would be pointless. But I do understand why people have them.

To me as long as both people involved are happy with the set up (not one agreeing simply because they dont want to be cheated on or they think not agreeing will mean they lose their partner) then I dont see a problem. Some people just arnt set-up to be monogomous.

However I wouldnt be dating anyone who was in an open relationship because I'm not sharing my man with no one, and I wouldnt seeing him changing his ways just for me, im not that special lol

I was watching this show called Strange Sex on the Discovery Channel I think and it was about this polyamorous relationship. One woman being emotionally/sexually intimate with two guys and all three of them lived together. There was never any threesomes or anything, she was just involved with both of them. She even had a baby with one of them and the three of them are taking care of the baby together.

I gotta tell ya...these three seemed happy as hell and very peaceful. I think they may be on to something.
