I never said I wanted a relationship with him.

I wanted to continue to date him and get to know one another she see if down the track I'd like a relationship.

And I wasn't going to just be sex.

If you're someone who tends to get attached, why would you even be down for hooking up with someone you barely know? This is what happens. You're getting to know him after you've jumped each others' bones and you think you're getting attached, while he isn't getting attached. You wouldn't have to worry so much about protecting your heart if you got to know people better before having sex with them.
