I'm giving him space, but every time I see him suffering or looking my way, or just being, I die inside. I must know how to make him feel more comfortable beyond giving him space.

His smitten by you just let him be that way, you don't have to do anything, his probably not expecting anything from you to do something just be yourself. Because That's exactly what I do, I keep looking at the person observing every move they make and the way they communicate with me and how they treat me.
We scorpio love to observe especially if i'm very attracted to that person its not the best advice but that's how I admire the person I am with. Bare that in mind that we're very good at showing and expressing ourselves; words doesn't come out so easily thats not how I/we express.
why do you feel you have to obligate and do something in return?

If you love him, then be there for him, but continue your life and lead by example. Forcing him to conform to your standard is not love, it's possession, he doesn't belong to anyone but himself.
