i think this has to be something that is influenced by your upbringing. jews are very education orientated. my parents believe, rightly so imo, that a good education makes you classless...not in the sense of lacking class, lol but that you are elevated beyond any class structure. you could be living in a cardboard box but still would be able to hold your own in society circles...that kinda thing.

consequently, failure wasn't an option for me. my two older brothers we complete boffins, one going to cambridge and the other oxford, so i had two hard acts to follow. but i didn't attend uni cos i wanted to please my dad by doing national service and after just over 2 years of that, i wanted to start making money when i got back to england.

up until 10 i was home schooled. then we went to england and i joined mainstream school there. i was a straight A student because i'd already been over-tutored in the years prior and so i mucked around and disrupted lessons for kicks.

after the army, i did a degree in microbiology through the open university. it took four years and a whole lot of self-motivation as it was a distance learning thing...had my own little lab at home...loved it lol.

then i got a grad job at an international investment bank and took a four year course to become qualified as a management accountant.

i LOVE learning. the older i get the more i like it. BUT I HATED SCHOOL!!! had it not been for my parents, i would've flunked totally. i don't like to learn in a force fed way, i want my curiosity stimulated....most teachers can't do that.

so basically, had it not been for my parents holding a gun to my head more or less for 10 years, i don't know how things would've turned out.

That is much of what brought me to that community btw.

You were in the army?

My fiance had no push for education from his family and was allowed to drop out.

Personally, my mother would have killed me.

yeah i was in the israeli army which is surprising as i generally have a complete lack of respect for authority. i like the discipline though...and the guns of course 😛 i always was a tomboy. i was the first of 6 kids to do national service and at the time my dad said that i was the 'son he never had', lol....i loved that. always wanted to make my dad happy....never managed to though.

i think scorpio types need to feel motivated themselves to study something...or they need to be 'forced' into it like my parents did us by making it so competitive to be the best even amongs siblings.

the whole education deal is one of the biggest responsibilities of being a parent. kids that naturally want to go to school every day and do their homework each night are few and far between, lol. it's down to parents to guide their kids in the right direction but to do it in a balanced way that doesn't put pressure on their child.

It's finals week and my Scorpio waited until last Thursday to tell me that he's failing out of one of his classes (he got his GED and has been in college because he knew I wouldn't date somebody without an education). He likes school but certain classes just.. he just doesn't bother doing anything in.

I'm keeping him inside today on this gorgeous day to have him try to make headway on his 5 essays and one presentation for this upcoming week.

He can do it. Just takes a bit of bribing to keep him motivated 😛 I'm going to do most of his presentation media formatting to help him out though. He's overwhelmed easily and needs to recharge sometimes.

-facepalm-

My mother never had to push me to learn - I'm naturally curious in everything. My father (an addict and he was not able to have me when young - but very long visits) read to me all the time. He's a Libra and loves to read and imagine. I credit him for pushing my natural curiosity to something tangible - I could read by myself at age 3. I was able to always explore instead of asking for help.

My mother is the most driven person that I know and sacrificed everything to build a strong foundation for me. I've decided that she deserves the same and I'd like to be able to have a great career to help support her enough to allow her to travel more. Typical Capricorn - always craving to explore the Earth 🙂

I also have an Aquarian grandmother who went back to college a few years ago! 🙂 And my Taurus grandfather works so hard despite his cancer.
