Arrogance can hurt or help a player; however, it is a thin line to tow. With MJ it didn't hurt him, as he was able to navigate it very well. Kobe's problem was that he may not have thought he was better than those he played with, but he sure as hell acted like it. He had a certain pedigree (growing up in Italy for several years, speaking Italian, father being a ball player, etc) that other athletes in his same age group (and older) didn't have; therefore, he was already "different" from them. Further, he appears to be a very private person, and as well all know - fame and privacy do NOT mix at all. Kobe is a polarizing player for people to discuss, but what I will say about him as that he is just THAT good. Plain and simple. Notice, I'm not comparing him to MJ or anybody else, I believe his play speaks for itself. Can he be heavy handed and try to take over games? Absolutely, but you will notice that most dynamic players (regardless of the sport) oftentimes have this feeling that they need/have to carry the team on their shoulders. It is a blessing and a curse.
