I only recall talking hockey with like 2 or 3 people here before most of whom I think are long gone, but Ill try and spread the seed of interest in the NHL.

The season began a little over 2 weeks ago

Storylines going into this season:

1. The PK Subban-Shea Weber Trade

Image Not Found

After the end of last season, this was the blockbuster trade in the offseason. Two defensive stars for their teams. (Think if Von Miller was traded for Luke Kuechly in NFL) Weber is a couple of years older than Subban but both are in the prime of their careers. Weber spent his whole career in Nashville up to this point. He now is an alternate captain for the Montreal Canadians. Subban meanwhile is one of the most entertaining players in the league. He fits coach Peter Laviolette quick attack style .

Subban was seen as the get in this trade as he is younger, but Weber is solid. In the long run Subban will most likely be great help to Nashville. At the start of this young season tho, Weber has been great help to Montreal already. The roster is revamped and so far they are kicking ass.

2. The Detroit Redwing Streak

The Redwings has the longest post season streak in sports. Meaning, they have made the playoffs 25 straight season. The only streak close to that are the NBA’s Spurs. They have not missed the playoffs since 1990, but they could miss it this year. They have a struggling defense and did not get any help during the offseason, but it is hard to ever count out Detroit.

3. Auston Matthews has Arrived

Image Not Found

The top prospect in the 2016 draft and the first American drafted 1st since Patrick Kane a decade ago. Matthews had an amazing first game with Toronto this season when he scored 4 freakin’ goals in one game.

4. Will the San Jose Sharks eat the west?

Coming into the season the Sharks were the favorites to win the Pacific division and maybe even the West again. They made it to the Stanley Cup finals last season but got swept by the Penguins putting a sad end to a great playoffs. They added people like forward Mikkel Boedker to add depth to the roster this year.

5. Sidney Concussion Crosby

Image Not Found

Last years Stanley Cup Champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins, entered this season with the touted “Best player in hockey” Sidney Crosby out with a concussion. He had major concussion issues a few seasons ago, but has just returned and led the team to a solid victory.

6. Connor McDavid: Youngest Captain ever

Image Not Found

While Auston Matthews was picked first this year in the draft by a Canadian Team, Connor McDavid was picked first last year by the Edmonton Oilers. The 19 year old has well rounded skills, but can he be as good as he is being pressured to be? For one, he has to stay healthy, but the question will be if he can have a 100 point season this year and if not is he considered a bust…

7. Florida Hockey Players are as old as their citizens

Image Not Found

Jaromir Jagr is 44 years old and he still managed to lead the Florida Panthers in scoring last season. In a league where all these young bucks are being pushed to be the center of their teams, Jagr is breaking the mold. He is on pace this season on passing Mark Messier as the second-leading point-getter in NHL history

8. Are the Jets in more Trouba?

The return to Winnipeg as a franchise has been rough for the Winnipeg Jets. Winnipeg was rewarded a franchise 5 years ago when the Atlanta Franchise was moved there. They have only made the playoffs one of the fives years since. Now they have a dispute with their defensemen Jacob Ryan Trouba. He wants to be traded because he wants a greater role on a team, and probably just a better team. Other teams are interested in a trade but are not offering what the Jets wants in return.

9. The Coaching questions?

Bruce Boudreau has done nothing but win divisions as the coach of the Washington Capitols and then the Anaheim Ducks. However he has had a problem in the playoffs. His Playoff record is barely above .500 and even though he has had someone the best teams in season play, he cannot get over this hump in the postseason. He is now the new coach of the Minnesota Wild. We will see how he does on another team

The Colorado Avalanche had a dramatic offseason when their head coach Patrick Roy quit at the last minute. They only had so much time to find a new coach and signed minor league coach Jared Bednar. Patrick Roy was arguably the greatest goalie of all time, but as a coach there were many problems. The Avalanche have a lot to improve on so we shall see what Bednar brings to the table.

10. The NHL celebrates 100 years as a thing

The NHL was founded in 1917 and will celebrate the 100th anniversary starting in January. “The Great one” Wayne Gretsky will be the ambassador. “The Centennial celebration will commence on January 1, 2017, in Toronto with the NHL Centennial Classic™ outdoor game between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at BMO Field. It will witness the unveiling of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history during All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles Jan 25-27. And it will visit every NHL market and dozens of other local hockey communities during a 12-month festival of events.”

Don’t have a team? Find one to get behind:

EAST

Metropolitan Division

1. NY Rangers currently 5-2-0 (10)

Their offense is fire to start the year. They look really good and with some lineup tuning could be an actual real contender this year.

2. Pittsburgh Penguins currently 4-2-1 (9)

Last year’s champs! Crosby is the man, but last year they were shot in the arm by the H.B.K. line (a shoutout to pro wrestler shawn michaels). The line was Hagelin, Bonino, and Kessel. However this year the line could start to be split up as the offense is looking for a spark. It is a long road to win to championships in a row, but they should be a contender nonetheless.

3. New Jersey Devils currently 3-2-1 (7)

The Devils are questionable at best right now. They got Taylor Hall in a trade with Edmonton and he helped get a win over AZ last night, buy while they’re undefeated on the road, they have not won at home. They’re offense has a scoring problem and has the worst shooting percentage in the league so far. Their saving grace will continue to be goalie, Cory Schneider, who can save with the best of em.

4. Washington Capitals currently 3-2-1 (7)

The struggle for the Capitals to win the big one has been real. They by far had the best record in the league last year, but fell short in the playoffs, again. Alex Ovechkin is personally one of my favorite players to watch. Goalie, Holtby will need to be on it again this season.

5. Philadelphia Flyers currently 3-3-1 (7)

A team that had a very quiet offseason, but that is because they have young up and comers who they hope will have great production this season. The team seems to not quit in games which makes them fun to watch late in a game.

6. NY Islanders currently 3-4 (6 )

Sometimes I think John Tavares is the most unrecognized talent in hockey. He doesn’t always get his due, but he is good and he showed that last season in the playoffs. Islanders signed people like Chimera in the offseason, but I’m not sure they can be anything more than mediocre this season. If they do make the playoffs again, they could always have a shot though.

7. Columbus Blue Jackets currently 2-2-1 (5)

John Tortorella is the most over-rated coach in hockey. It was seen clearly when he coached Team USA to suck it up in the World Cup of hockey. The Blue Jackets were supposed to have been improving so much over the years but nothing ever came to fruition. They have the young Seth Jones at defense and 2 time cup winner with the blackhawks Brandon Saad at left wing. They have the possibility of success, but I do not have much faith in them.

8. Carolina Hurricanes currently 1-3-2 (4)

There were some rumblings that they could be the dark horse this season, but if the first two weeks of play are any indication, they will just be in the dark come seasons end. They have young pieces beating themselves right now. I’m sure they can improve greatly, but they need to do it sooner rather than later.

Atlantic Division

1. Montreal Canadians currently 6-0-1 (12)

Last season zero Canadian teams made the playoffs and Canada was heartbroken. If there is any sure bet to make the playoffs this year it is Montreal. Fantastic goaltender Carey Price got injured early last season and the team died from there. Price is back now and playing well. They added Weber and Andrew Shaw. They are currently the only team in the league to not lose regulation.

2. Tampa Bay Lightning 5-1 (10)

Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman has this team primed for success. All the pieces are in place from Drouin, to Stamkos and Bishop. They are a top contender in the east this year. Right as I am typing this they are playing Montreal. It is going to be a battle between the current 1st and 2nd places in the division.

3. Detroit Redwings currently 5-2 (10)

This team’s biggest question is defense. The team as a whole has been successful thus far, but there are holes. To make up for subpar defense they have two good goalies in Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek to get them out of bad situations.

4. Ottawa Senators currently 4-2 (8)

Guy Boucher is now coaching the team after many shuffles in the offseason. When Craig Anderson is on, he is one of the best goaltenders, but he has his off nights. Erik Karlsson is the man of this team, but he cannot do it alone. I do not know what kind of year Ottawa will have.

5. Florida Panthers currently 3-2-1 (7)

They had their best season in franchise history last year. They signed Veteran Defensemen Keith Yandle and of course have super veteran Jaromir Jagr. They need more production from others offensively and not just 44 year old Jagr. They have no reason to not have success again this season.

6. Boston Bruins currently 3-4 (6 )

Bruins came oh so close to making the playoffs last season. It came down to the wire and they just missed it. Boston added veteran forwards David Backes and Dominic Moore but their defense is sketchy. Bergeron and Marchand are consistent though so you can never count Boston out.

7. Toronto Maple Leafs currently 1-2-3 (5)

Toronto was the worst team in the league last season, but have been hyped up this year. First round pick Auston Matthews had 4 goals in the first game of the season and Toronto still managed to lose. The defense is just atrocious. Frederik Andersons goaltending has been rough as well. So Maple Leafs can score, but not as much they can be scored on them. They’ve lost 3 games in overtime. One thing is for sure, I love watching this team. Their games have been quite entertaining.

8. Buffalo Sabers Currently 1-2-2 (4)

Sabers have made major moves the last few season. They brought in Ryan O’ Reilly from Colorado. They acquired Kulikov via trade from the Florida Panthers and signed free agent Okposo. Young 19 year old Boston University alumni, Jack Eichel, had a great rookie season. All the potential in the world is in Buffalo, but it still also has to come together.

WEST

Central Division

1. Minnesota Wild currently 4-2-1 (9)

New coach Bruce Boudreau already has the team on top of the division which is what he does best. There is a long season to go though. They now have vet Eric Staal who is out to prove he is not washed up. The defense is still the best aspect of the Wild and Boudreau will get them to the playoffs, but who knows how far.

2. St. Louis Blues currently 4-2-1 (9)

The team finally did not choke in the first round of the playoffs last year against Chicago. They come into this season depending on a younger core. Paul Stastny came alive at the second half of last season and will need to do so this year. Blues traded their goalie Brian Elliot to the Flames. They are now relying on Jake Allen and Carter Hutton.

3. Dallas Stars currently 3-2-1 (7)

It is Stanley Cup or bust for the Stars this season. They were the best of the West last season. However, they have so many injuries right now that they need the depth of their roster to continue to step up.

4. Chicago Blackhawks currently 3-3-1 (7)

Always the force to be reckoned with in the West. They also always seem to make many changes in the offseason when they’re trying to stay within the salary cap. GM Stan Bowman is always able to make the right moves and coach Joel Quenneville is one of the best. Even with changes they still have the fantastic goaltending of Corey Crawford and the perfect storm of Kane and Toews.

5. Colorado Avalanche currently 3-2 (6 )

This would be my horse in the race. 20 years of the Avalanche here in Colorado. Coming off some downer seasons with Patrick Roy as coach. It was only 3 years ago that they were one of the best teams in the league though. They had weak puck possession under Roy and is what they are improving on now. Matt Duchene and Nathon MacKinnon are great and Tyson Barrie and Gabe Landeskog tie the team together. They still have a lot of work to do on defense and Semyon Varlamov is an inconsistent goalie these days.

6. Nashville Predators currently 2-4 (4)

A disappointing start to say the least. They were so exciting in last years postseason. They now also have the exciting P.K. Subban to add to an already aggressive team. Subban is already leading the team in Points with Filip Forsberg. They depth of the roster is the problem. They have the best top lines in hockey, but after that the scoring is questionable. Veteran Goaltender Pekka Rinne is struggling to start the season and that is the biggest thorn in their side.

7. Winnipeg Jets currently 2-4 (4)

There is so much competition in the central that it will be hard for the Jets to find another postseason. They have a plethora of young talent. Patrik Laine is fun, but they need something more. I think the team will glue together more and improve as the season goes on, but I do not know if it will be enough to fight it out with the rest of the division.

Pacific Division

1. Edmonton Oilers currently 6-1 (12)

The Oilers have not made the playoffs for 10 years. They have come out this season swinging. Connor McDavid is a beast. He already has 11 points. Explosive is the only word to describe this offense. If they can keep up this kind of production they may be the team to beat this year.

2. Vancouver Canucks currently 4-2-1 (9)

Another Canadian team looking formidable so far. Brothers Daniel and Henrik Sedin have found what has been called a “third Sedin brother” in Loui Eriksson. The team is not scoring a lot of goals, but teams are not scoring a lot of goals on them either. Both goalies, Jacob Markstrom and Ryan Miller have been excellent.

3. San Jose Sharks currently 4-3 (8)

They lost in the Stanley Cup Finals last season and are looking to get back there. The Pacific is a division that is really up in the air so San Jose should be able to take advantage of that. Speed is what got them through the playoffs last year and if they can keep that up they’re golden.

4. Anaheim Ducks currently 3-3-2 (8)

New coach Randy Carlyle is just trying the build on the success they have had the past few season. They have to get through the playoff hump though. The starting goalie is not a going John Gibson. He has shown flashes of greatness, but now as the main goalie on the team will have to prove himself. He has won 3 out of 5 starts so far, but could be better.

5. Calgary Flames currently 3-4-1 (7)

They had inconsistent goaltending last year that let down the talented youth on the team. They went out and traded for Brian Elliot of the Blues. So far he has been inconsistent as well. He has had a very disappointing start which does not bode well for the team again. Elliot should be able to turn things around, but we shall see.

6. Los Angeles Kings currently 3-3 (6 )

There is still a solid core on the Kings. Their brand of the team is changing though. The big team that use to dominate possession is fading. They still have Doughty and Kopitar who are still among the elite centers and defensemen in the game. I’m not sure exactly what we will get out of this team in 2016-17.

7. Arizona Coyotes currently 1-5 (2)

John Chayka is the youngest GM in NHL history at 27. He was brought in from the world of analytics. I can see how analytics would work on a numbers game such as baseball, but hockey is a different beast. They have a lot of prospects. There is still the assumption that the team will be good in a few years, and they probably will be. Right now the team is torturous to watch though.

I'm Hawks and he's Devils. They got the double on us last season so last night felt pretty good.

I'm also guilty of not paying as much attention as I should until December. It usually takes us a while to heat up so the first part of the season can be pretty soul crushing.
Yay another hockey fan!

I was mentally prepared to talk to myself in this thread all season 😛

I feel like the NHL just starts slow in general. Plus it bleeds into the MLB Postseason and the NFL season. Also boring basketball.

Hawks look pretty solid already from the little Ive seen of them. The Devils dont look half bad either. That was the first game theyve lost at home. They have been consistently bad since their stanley cup loss a few years ago. If they could score more I really do think Schneider could carry them far.

English Premier League starts with a bang in August so I'm usually preoccupied with that at the beginning of the season. Then Liverpool starts to shit the bed about the time the Blackhawks get their shit together so it works out. 😄

White Sox girl so post season baseball isn't really an issue. I mean this year, sure. Gotta be ready for when/if the Cubs end it all. And I don't mean the curse. I mean, if the Cubs win the WS, I'm fully expecting an apocalypse.

We're better than where we were this time last season. The Kane stuff made for a rough start. Also getting used to the new trades. Got by with the same guys for so long. Really missed Sharp there for a bit. Big Shaw fan so gonna miss him this season. Dread the day we finally lose Keith.

Last night was the first Sexy Wrenches game I've watched all season so can't speak much on them. Probably gonna pick up tix for when they come to the UC in Dec tho. A Chrimbo present to each other.

I try and get into EPL, but all those european soccer leagues I can never understand. Especially since they seem to connect eventually. So I just stick to the soccer tournaments.

Im a cubs fan so the postseason is shocking and could very well bring the end of days lol. They need a tough win tonight though or theyre in trouble.

I feel Blackhawks have been losing pieces here and there along the way, but they always seem to make the right moves and still be successful. It has been awhile since they missed the playoffs. Now that the Avs have to share a division with them it is hard to like them lol. The central is just tough in general right now. Colorado needs to get out of mediocrity because it isnt going to work in the central. Chicago's biggest issue so far has been defending the power play, but I dont expect that to continue for long. I totes expect them to be be at least top 3 in the central again.

Oilers got me feeling pretty good about picking them for the finals.

Ducks don't look anything like they did in 1st round
Theyre not playing their game which is a slower defensive one
Kinda hard to do against such an aggressive, well skating team

Theyre gonna have to figure out a way to slow it down or they will be screwed for sure
