You might like the book "Longitude", author Dava Sobel. About how determining longitude calculation was finally brought about. (It reads better than it sounds, trust me.)
In getting the gist, the book explains alot of surrounding events, why they desperately needed it, political intrigue, etc. Also fairly short book @ 180 pages. Uhm. You could also call it how modern clocks were created.
As for best time period.. couldn't decide. I think my close second was the Rennaisance Era (how long was that, really?)

lawgoddess, if you ever come to America, go to Manitulin Island in Ontario, Canada, because they have the greatest pow-wows. The area is unceded territory, so the Natives have always owned the land, Canada has no real rights to it. It's fascinating with all the holistic medicine churches and there are tons of art gallery that have the most beautiful native art.

i would go to the city of atlantis, where possibly humans first flourished, i would see if this place is actually the garden of eden, And see if these fallen angels were just mere missionaries from the city. But then again, i wouldnt want to be part of that particular day when supposedly mt atlas erupted and caused the seas to stirr, explosions covered the sky, cinder, evaporated water, rained for "40 days and 40 nights" or so i researched. I suppose we have to think in their mentality back then since they couldnt put everything so scientifically, if hail were to fall from the sky they'd probably say "rocks falling from sky" and im talking to myself, ha.

The ancient Greeks attempted to mend their myths calling, by the name of "Atlantic", the whole ocean that encircles Eurasia and Africa. But the result was even worse than before and the confusion only grew. Herodotus used to laugh at this ridiculous attempt by the geographers of his time (Hist. 2:28). Aristotle

It was in the Orient, and beyond, that agriculture (of rice and grains) and animal domestication were invented. These two crucial inventions allowed Man?s fixation to the soil, and the resulting prosperity led to civilization and the founding of the first cities. It is exactly this fact that is related in the Bible, that attributes the foundation of the first city ? called Henok or Chenok, ("the Abode of the Pure", in Dravida) ? to Cain (Gen. 4:17).
