Im in college, and have been dating a virgo girl for a year. Her family makes the pope look like a lazy sinner and has caused her to have that ol' crazy catholic guilt. So our sex life hurts tremendously whenever she visits her family for at least a week afterwards. Shes living with her family for the summer and I havent had sex in 2 months although I see her constantly because of it. Also she now has this feeling that shes worthless because her moms a bitch. How do IO get her out of this funk. If your a virgo and you were being stifled to depression by your mother would there be anything your boyfreind could do?

V3,

There definitely seems to be a trend going here since you've stated the 'suffering' of your sex life for at least a week after every time she visits with her family.

While everyone experiences some level of depression every now and again (and this is pretty normal until it becomes 'clinical depression'), in the case of your girlfriend, one way to support her would be to monitor other areas of her behavior. What I mean by this is, it would make a bit of sense that your sex life would suffer for some time after her spending time with her family due to their religious beliefs (even as crazy as that sounds) and her brief bouts of guilt for having sex outside of marriage(?), but the recent onset of her feelings of worthlessness should raise red flags of concern.

Depression is a mental illness that affects the mind, body and spirit and if she is talking feelings of worthlessness, you may want to check for things like changes in her normal day-to-day activities, chronic fatigue, lots of crying, sadness, irritability etc. Perhaps I'm reaching here(?) and her situation is not that serious but, it wouldn't hurt to keep an eye out for possible 'deterioration'.

Depression can be caused by many different things between both forces of nature and nurture and in your girlfriend's case, seems as though having to conform to her family's religious beliefs as it relates to sex (and whatever else) has become a bit of a 'life stressor'. Also, since this is an astrology site and you asked your question from a somewhat astrological standpoint(?), being a Virgo can oftentimes mean having an extremely fragile psyche so being prone to depression when under stress, is no stranger to our lot. From the astrological aspect, the zodiac sign would fall into the 'nature' category.

You should talk to her and get a better idea of what she means when she says she feels 'worthless' and then explore some ways that she thinks would help her to not feel this way (even if it means expressing her feelings to her family). I'm not asking you to be her therapist but, helping her to establish practical ways to 'kick' her feelings of worthlessness would be a start...maybe? 'Talk Therapy' is a good way to start. Encouraging her to open up and talk about what's bothering her is a very simple and effective (can be) method of establishing a path for healing.

Sorry I went all therapeutic on you.

hey its all good on the therapeautic part (psych major) thank you. And i do a great deal of talk therapy and weve been to several professionals. And luckily enough we do have a great communication line. And you were dead on about the other symptoms. Shes absolutely depressed. It stems from her mother who is verbally abusive. I wish for her sake virgos would go into states of anger under stress instead of depression. But i feel like she is absolutely open with me and ill take ur advice and keep an eye on how the depression progresses.

How did I sense that you were into the social and behavioral sciences?

I think it's great that you have sought professional help and that the two of you have an open line of communication.

It sounds like you really have her back and have been really supportive. I wish the both of you all the best of luck and with you by her side, sounds like she has a great chance of pulling through.

On another note, I started thinking about how the 'game would/could change' if zodiac signs were taken into account in the world of psychology. From my past experience, many Cancers (the emotional souls ruled by the moon) who seek professional therapy are often diagnosed with bi-polar disorder (mood disorder). I also read that Virgos are highly prone to mental disorders and it made so much sense to me (the stuff that goes on in our minds and being ruled by mercury). Geez, just thinking of it, we could range anywhere from OCD to phobias, panic disorders and delirium (which of course are all cognitive disorders). The consideration of zodiac signs within the psych field would probably never happen, but, I believe there's something to it. Then again, what the hell do I know?

I think thats a pretty cool idea. you could be the first. Im more into the cognitive neuro part of psychology and there have been many studies done on how spiritual or religious changes actually effect your biological process, so why not do a study comparing different signs and look for biological differences you never know what we might find out!

But the truth about bipolar and etc. (bipolar especially) This is gonna get kind of wordy sorry...

The DSM IV TR is a book that has all the disorders and the symptoms of the disorders in it.

Insurance companies will not reimburse a therapist unless the therapist diagnoses a client with something in the DSM

In 1993 when the book was being revised a Psychologist named Joseph Biederman was doing the research for Bipolar symptoms.

After the book had already been put to use, Biederman messed up his taxes and everyone found out a drug company paid him 1.3 million dollars to make bipolar symptoms more general.

Hes currently serving out his sentence in prison,
But now everyone has bipolar. Sorry I know this had nothing to do with astrology except its not just cancers, its everyone. And its really really cruddy that the APA wont risk losing money to do something about it.

Oh, I know all about the DSM IV TR...well, maybe not all, but have one at home. LOL.

Yeah, this thing about the therapists not being reimbursed if they aren't diagnosing from the DSM has always had me thinking that at the end of the day, it really all comes back to the green dollar. Maybe in some respects? On the other hand, I understand that a manual like the DSM is absolutely necessary (of course) for diagnosis and treatment purposes for those with mental illnesses.

Another funny thing is how the psychiatrists don't want some therapists (MFT's - marriage and family therapists) to be able to make diagnoses. I think that if a therapist (regardless of what type of therapist it is) is 'treating' a client, or laying groundwork for mental/emotional healing, he/she should be able to make a diagnosis...no? Maybe they don't want the competition? Monopoly, monopoly, monopoly, monopoly.

LMFAO @ the whole Bierderman thing. 'messed up on his taxes' How ironic!

You are right. Bi-polar is sort of like the 'default' mental illness.

Also, I have talked to quite a few people who were 'diagnosed' a few times more than once and each time they came out with a different mental illness, and this was as per hospitals, OMH agencies, and private practices. Ha!

Yea I think its bullshit that counselors and etc. cant diagnose people. I think its an ego thing from way back when gotta make psychologists feel important. lol sad but true about people getting repeatedly misdiagnosed. And yup all bout that dollar. I have a theory that autism is going to be one of the new defaults like very minor forms of autism, I say that because drug companies are coming out with new "treatments". so bye bye adhd and bipolar weve all just been autistic all this time!

Ha! Forgot about the ADHD thing. Any child in America who even disrupts a classroom for a nanosecond is diagnosed with that shit and I believe the numbers for AA children alone are quite high. So we're in the autism phase now....hmmmm...wonder if they're trying to go through the entire DSM? I predict they'll move all our asses into schizoaffective disorder next...ha!
