"Strong Beer" by Robert Graves

?WHAT do you think
The bravest drink
Under the sky??
?Strong beer,? said I.

?There?s a place for everything, 5
Everything, anything,
There?s a place for everything
Where it ought to be:
For a chicken, the hen?s wing;
For poison, the bee?s sting; 10
For almond-blossom, Spring;
A beerhouse for me.?

?There?s a prize for every one
Every one, any one,
There?s a prize for every one, 15
Whoever he may be:
Crags for the mountaineer,
Flags for the Fusilier,
For English poets, beer!
Strong beer for me!? 20

?Tell us, now, how and when
We may find the bravest men??
?A sure test, an easy test:
Those that drink beer are the best,
Brown beer strongly brewed, 25
English drink and English food.?

Oh, never choose as Gideon chose
By the cold well, but rather those
Who look on beer when it is brown,
Smack their lips and gulp it down. 30
Leave the lads who tamely drink
With Gideon by the water brink,
But search the benches of the Plough,
The Tun, the Sun, the Spotted Cow,
For jolly rascal lads who pray, 35
Pewter in hand, at close of day,
?Teach me to live that I may fear
The grave as little as my beer.?

Actually.. I wanna know about beer. I'm quite the neophyte in that respect. I've tried a few (and I don't mean the nasty Top Five American choices.. that's brainwashing.) Heinekin tastes sour to me. I do like MooseHead Beer (Canadian Lager.) "what's a Lager?" I've a respected friend who swears by Guiness, but ONLY at room temp. It's like..an obsession with her. She can go on for days about it.
What are the major catagories, and differences? Anyone? James??

lol. Ok.. hmm. MooseHead, Corona, and.. (?) I really need a third choice. Must investigate that. Let's see, actual drinking for effect has to be Wild Turkey. It's just where I stopped experiementing. I like beer, but liquor makes more sense to me. (More bang/volume) Shots over bottles, etc.
I will be brave and try that Guiness, shortly. There's just something about "foaming beer" at room temp thats .. unnatural.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love liquor (I hope I'm not coming off as a lush...)...tequila is the best, IMO. Vodka seems to make me sick faster, or something. Guiness scares me. I've also had friends pressure me to try it and I've been very anti-guiness because I don't like thick, heavy, strong tasting, foamy warm beers. Which sounds like what Guiness would be. I suppose I *should* give it a try one of these days, after all, I have some Irish in me 😉

(any excuse, right? hehe)

I don't think I want a full Guiness of my own either.
You're liking vodka over tequila was surprising. Tequila and I don't mix. I'd get ill. (I didn't, but could tell.) I was told vodka didn't give you a hang over. Mebbe it was scotch? If you're not speaking of sipping drinks now, I like Kamikaze's. Kinda of like limonade with a bang. Stoli vodka, limejuice, something esle (not important..grin) shaken, strained through ice, and shot back in one pass. It tastes good and it works fast. Not meant to be sipped.
About the irish in you.. perhaps irish coffee first. That's surprisingly good, on occassion.

by the way, I was verrrrrrry, verrrrrrry, very sick that night. I remember my friend picking me up and carrying me to the ladies room like four times. I remember whoever's house we were at, they had maroon carpeting. How strange. Maroon carpeting.

And the people who lived there were these gothic, punk type of people...I'm talking guys with spiked mohawks and black fingernails and everything pierced.

Interesting night.
