"Does art imitate life or does life imitate art?"

Art imitates and adds some imagination to it. Like olden days idea of heaven was full of wooden structure and after man invented gold, he painted his idea of heaven with gold. Bcoz he had that major misconception that white is the color of pure and black is the color of evil, he painted his imaginary heaven with white. since they believed its above the clouds, they had to even add wings to justify the means of transport and gravity. Angels were all naked hot chicks in primitive era and slowly we painted some dress to them and after Jesus mentioned kids are innocent, we immediately changed the naked babes and painted kids with wings instead. And we dont have any sea creatures out there in heaven i guess. probably bcoz man assumed the ones who live in water cannot survive in air or havent seen them at all. Also primitive men had no idea abt the oxygen content on higher altitudes. else he might have painted gods and angels with oxygen mask.

Art will always imitate life. Bcoz our brain cannot imagine more than what we have seen in this earth.

nobody imagined a car before they invented bicycle. No one imagined a bicycle before they invented a wheel. No one imagined a wheel before they figured out round shaped wood can be used to transport heavy objects.
Attempt to fly like a bird was always there.

For everything man has invented or imagined has some resemblance with nature. Like all the aliens you get to see in movies have human or animal features. We are simply incapable of imagining anything more than what we can see around. Limits to imagination is the limits to our awareness of nature. So art imitates life. I dont know if aqua is one step better here.
And humans have imagined certain things like heaven, hell, after life and stuff like that which none of us have ever seen or ever will. And all of those elements in that imaginary world are elements of nature exaggerated to fit mans beliefs and capabilities of reasoning.

Can it be considered as art or imagination? its the need like you said. but if we look at subjects which are not useful to us like aliens, heaven, hell, unicorn, angels, time travel, tele-transportation, superpowers etc, those are the pure imaginary concepts which still remain as an imaginary concept. There was no idea or imagination of a modern day computer till we got grips on electronics and electricity. Only when we have the base element, we tend to apply further logic on top of that and try to imagine further. Took us so much of time to find out electricity even though it was readily available in nature. Its a gradual process imho. So imagination cannot be infinity. Its constrained by our knowledge of nature.
