Okay you fixed signs, how would someone persuade you to change your opinion or an idea that is stuck in your head?

For instance, if you had an attitude that you should go about doing things a certain way or an ideology about politics or something you say you wouldn't do again....how could someone approach you to change your attitude about it?

Just a general question I thought might be an interesting discussion.

Justify why I should change an opinion with FACT. Anything short of that..well, you know.

Show me evidence that your way is better. 🙂

Okay, so concrete evidence and facts. I can work with that.

Is it better to present gradually and let it soak in or just matter of factly present it all at once?

Depends.

If you present it as though it will make me happy/my life easier... and isn't it wonderful news?

That would be nice. 😄

If you're an ass about it, condescending, or "I told you so" (not that you would ever do that), I doubt I would be very receptive.

But approach may be where the fixed signs differ-- I admit in some cases, I would have ego tied into it more than others.

(Sorry!)

Putting it all on the table at one time can induce cognitive dissonance depending on the issue.

Well then I guess the person who thinks they can change my mind will be the one to walk away, because I won't follow unless they can justify why I should change my thought process or decisions backed up with facts.

If someone wants to change what I think...bring it or stfu. Pretty simple.

I've had fixed signs literally "shut down" a couple of times because their idea of reality wasn't actually so.
It was like they would absolutely refuse to process the facts in front of them.

I think the best thing you can do is just lead by example. People in general do not change often or willingly. Fixed sign people are just even worse about changing. If what you do is really that much better than what someone else does... They will notice and adjust accordingly. If its something so small that it will be hard to notice... I wouldn't worry about it.

The easiest way would be through logic, but there are many other ways.

It really depends of the situation.

Perhaps this thread will get interesting when the sheep come in. So far, it's logical and consistent.

From what I've seen in dxp...logic is not interesting, and typically looked down upon.

I have no opinion on the matter.

Just had to jump to show approval for this post. ^^^^

Couldn't agree more.

Frankly, I'd like to see more logical, mature discussions. I enjoy them much more.

Can you give some examples of the other ways?

You can either appeal to reason or their emotions. It's a matter of being observant and pushing the right buttons.

Let's say for example, I don't like the idea of people not earning what they have. Everyone should contribute to society, it's just fair. But every single time I see a beggar, what do I do? I give the poor man some money. I can't just keep walking and feel guilty for the rest of the day.

Sometimes all it takes is a pleading look or an enticing cleavage. Other times I just trust your judgement over mine. I'm really big on respect and trust, but they take time to be built. That's why I said logic is the easiest way.

"you're wrong and here's why" = go fuck yourself, asshole.

"here is what i feel about what we're talking about" = i will listen

But what if you really are wrong? Like if you (well, not you personally Scorch) get a fact wrong and then find out later on that the other person was actually correct, wouldn't you have appreciated them letting you know so you didn't foolishly argue with a group of people on incorrect facts?

I suppose it's all in the approach, but some people get into that arguement mode and won't listen to a quietly suggested correction.

I knew what you were getting at, it just made me think of this scenario.
