Bluemoon, always go with both, plenty of things help. Transits and progressions are very useful timers but I find they operate as a pair. Progressions show the everchanging landscape of one's internal realities, while transits usually trigger life events.
An Ascendant changing sign through progression will be a significant time in someone's life. The Moon square Pluto, too, Sun/Pluto and so on.

Elly it's an abstract concept based on the planets movements on the sky in the (90) days after you were born. Calculating a day for a year shows general landscapes about how your life might work. There was this astrologer who said how she could not sleep all night after having understood the progressions, frantically checking parans and the moon's movements.. It's true. Highly debatable if knowing certain things in advance is good..

Everevolvingepithet, the Nodes are always moving backwards. The Sun and Moon never go retrograde. With Mercury you have a strong chance of seeing it turn direct

Transits are the easier part. You can ask astro to show them on your natal chart and look at the outer planets, Neptune, Uranus, Pluto, yeah Saturn too. If you see Pluto approaching a certain house (moves very slowly, it'll hit and give you pleeenty of time to understand AfTER, lol) to see what will change. Read about the matters of that house and try putting them in order before Pluto gets there .. With Neptune, treat the house where Neptune is like a dissolving reality, read the fine print, because Neptune is the god of illusion/dream OR illusion/fraud. And so on. Yeah transits are very important, especially if the planet is approaching one of the four angles. Events will always happen max 5 degrees before the planet reaches the exact aspect, so don't wait for the clock to strike midnight

@ Bluemoon: Uranus in Leebra 🙂 , MC in beloved Aries 🙂 you know the parental house, 4th and 10th who reflect the generic/natural parents are very literal in my case: 10th has an Aries, like my dad, 4th owns my Scorp mom.

@everevolvingepithet: the year where the planet turns direct equates to waking up those planetary energies. Retrogrades to direct are what sleep is to awake time. Sleep is necessary otherwise the mind would overload with data and explode lol.
The retrograde is a process where the planet's energies turn within to reorganize, re-think, reconsider things. Like an incubator for genius energies created under the snow. While in the incubator, we can behave In quite teenage naive ways when it comes to that domain in our lives. As soon as tge planet turns direct, all those great incubated ideas will burst into consciousness in a random manner that sometimes (initially) creates problems to the native, unused to deal with such projects. In time, things get to normalize themselves.

@TasteofChaos: if you have a natal chart on astro, go choose Progressed Chart and keep playing with the years, advancing them from your year of birth, untill you see that R tag disappear in the table. That's the year the planet turns direct. It marks a shift in consciousness. Majority of times, it's accompanied by a transit that generates the life event which makes you change. Look at the house of the transit to see what it is.

@Scorchedeath: if you have that many planets retr. It means that somehow somewhere this is what your soul needs to grow. It is a blessing, although not easy. Have you checkee if any of them might turn direct?

@MzSagittarius and PurrrHisss: Saturn retrograde does speak of issues around the father. There is an excellent book about retrogrades "Retrograde Planets. Traversing the inner landscape" by Erin Sullivan. Exceptional work. Bought it used from Amazon, cpl of dollars from some public library. For the amount of knowledge it contains it is unbelievable nobody gets it..

Ok, here's the story: this is why it's so important to read and know the basis and complexity of archetypes. What does Pluto mean. What does the 4th house mean. Because someone else can give you pointers chosen from the multitude of Pluto symbolic transformations, however knowing your own life and the archetypes you will see them at work, in depth, and no longer rely on external interpretations that can be faulty.
These things can go from literal to hugely abstract, and here's an ex.:
Pluto enters the 4th house. What does Pluto stand for? Transformation, rebirth, Phoenix, giving up old ways to create new ones, shed the old (snake skin). Do people like abandoning their comfort zone? No. Will they cling to it? Yes. So upon approaching the 4th house responsible with the matrix, the source, the parents, the tribe, the family, the intimate, the "womb and the tomb" where physical matter ends, Pluto hits in a way that forces us to shed some skin. Pipes in the house can break (literal meaning); an old mine or tomb is discovered under the house; our perception of it is never the same; we move; the tribe (country) suffers some inevitable change; some people even die during the transit (4th house means the end of the matter too), especially when doing a transit for someone older, a transformation towards the other dimension needs to be considered.

You need to exercise your mind into these things and compare them with your life events, soon you'll make the necessary connections.

Jupiter retrograde. It means that the jupiterian expansion will be internally oriented, so the beliefs that were usually priorly accepted might now go challenged and rearranged. What is good for society might no longer be a valid truth for me. Wisdom is what is gained. Jupiter is the easiest retrograde, it usually operates with convictions, changing them. Since a direct planet turns retrograde, all the info/data accumulated so far goes into a process of digestion and filter; it'll probably last for the rest of your life.

Pluto turning direct .. there you have to look at the house where your natal pluto sits and the house where Scorpio is. You'll get razor sharp sight in that area.

and to finish witb the transits; in the ex. with Pluto transiting the 4th, since Pluto is an outer planet moving slowly, it will take more than 5 years to make its way towards the 5th. By the end of the transit you would have ideally understood, dealt with and internalized all the lessons you were supposed to learn, you're renewed. So Pluto moves on approaching the 5th (kids, creativity, love affairs, etc). now, if your marriage is already on shaky grounds, how do you think you'll experience Pluto?
And so on.
Pluto has entered my 6th house 2 months ago. Swear to God I can only eat salads apples and the healthy stuff lol, Im the saint in plain church 🙂)

Oh OK, cool. Since your Uranus and Midheaven are in opposite signs, do they form an opposition in your chart?

So a retrograde planet turning direct in progression means that the past life karma carried over with that planet has been worked out then? Yay! 😄

No Uranus is sq my Asc but doesn't make an aspect to the MC.
About the karma, it's for sure that certain things need to be lived. They're necessary and go in mysterious ways, sometimes you see them on tv and you just cringe, now understanding how and why.
Thing is, we focus too much on the pain or traumatic events related to transits and don't develop the capacity to detach and keep asking ourselves: so what am I supposed to learn now? What's the bigger, repeat Bigger picture here?
There's this funny ex. of someone older who kept calling the astrologer to ask, is it over yet, is it over now? Cause her progressed moon was entering the 8th house (death taxes inheritance ancestors sex etc). It isn't what you think!!! 🙂)) she lived longer, won some kind of inheritance and that's the story lol

@PurrrHisss
Venus progressing in the 12th is mysterious, I need to read about it more extensively since I have the same placing untill the end of my days ..mundane astrol. peaks of hidden love relationships/affairs ewww. 12th is the house of the self undoing, where our own perception on things could unde the normal happy result..

@Elly I am so glad you got the concept ! Retrogrades, as any other astrological transits are theoretically nor good or bad but the ego perceives them this way. They are just plates handed with stuff to learn placed on them. Sometimes not the tastiest food, but hey.

@TasteofChaos. I don't usually consider the chart at such a young age cause often times it belongs to the parents; the kid doesn't really have an individuality that's formed. You might ask yourself if you moved, changed schools, took a trip that somehoe changed the way you saw the world.

Thank you for sharing 🙂 Right now it's going through Aquarius
About the 8th of the 12th house; I actually find the 8th to be the source of karma, more than the 12th; In the 8th, it is the ancestors who unravel karmic inheritance while with the 12th our own traits live there, hidden behind the mask, Ascendant, and are deemed as unacceptable, therefore never brought to the free conscious mind. Its where psychic closet is, where the thoughts are locked, never get to emerge and be lived normally, therefore undo our opportunity to heal.
If you look in the astro databank, more cases of murder/crime lie have an 8th house placement than 12, although an angular Uranus, Mars, Pluto also play a role..
Don't know, here's a fascinating article you might have read, the Kennedy charts (down the page) are just compelling

@ Wasis: Saturn turning direct is something you can look forward to 🙂

Taurusgemini, it's by doing a progressed chart, the small R next to the planet show you

Lostinmymind, you've come up with the right point, the reverse happens, too. After your retrogrades turn direct, direct planets can turn retrograde, which changes our paths, too, absorbing the energy within.

They're neither positive nor negative. They're just circumstances that help your learning. Sometimes the flow of energies represented by those planets goes within, underground, into a reflecting form, like being pregnant. Genius is being created under the covers, in the laboratory. The behaviour relating to that planet is often childish, even contrary to what the rest of the society's views are about the matter.

Ok here's the thing. When stuff moves around in your chart it bursts new things from the subconscious to the conscious world. Things that you have to live; what USUALLY happens is a string of events that acompany the change of internal landscape of perceptions, just like an external sounding board, a pretext, an opportunity to live the new elements.
The more you'll learn astrology the more you'll notice how these events are not obvious. Sometimes you end up pretty surprised at how insidious they are actually .. but only the astroknowledge helps yoy connect the dots. Loots of a-ha moments follow ..
