Any Birthday Present Ideas?

I've been going out with a Cancer guy and his birthday is approaching.
I thought about making him a small cute cake or baking cookies and buying him a book.
Is this a good idea? What are your suggestions?

Note: We aren't very serious so I don't want to give him a framed picture of us or anything similarly romantic or sentimental because I don't want to look needy and too attached. And yet I don't want to give him a coffee mug or something equally impersonal.

my cancer's birthday was monday so what i did was i baked him a cake, put every ounce of creativity i could muster...i mean i don't know how to cook so baking is so hard but I am proud to pull it off. with a happy birthday and his name on it...dont know how to put a pic here... and then i made a video showing him the cake, singing happy birthday and blowing the candle..made a couple birthday wishes (we are in a long distance relationship ) so it counts. popped the video on his skype at midnight so when he wakes up its there waiting for him. And oh, i sent him a silver bracelet with his family crest engrave on it...luckily it also arrived on the day of his birthday so yey!

and oh, before i forget....all i got was a speechless man when we did a videocall and a thank you.

dont want to make a big deal out of it but...why speechless? hmmm...anyway...
