Yes to all. There's no particular reason or scenario. Just like y'all swim away, we shell up. Sometimes we don't know why, we just want to be left alone. Sometimes you're dealing with a Luna-tic like me who runs with the moon.

So many reasons and it can sometimes be pointless to even ask. Everyone here has great answers.
-phases of the moon
-too much of one type of energy at one time from the environment or someone else (too much negativity OR positivity)
-hurt, rejected, lonely, abused, isolated (could be isolated by choice or from someone else), angry, resentful, etc
-introspective/self analyzing (could be positive, like just got the job of your dreams and need time to process or could be negative like did I make the right decision when I did that negative thing)
-deep in philosophical thought
-processing emotion (pos or neg)
-over active socially and needs alone downtime
-may have hurt someone else
-not interested in someone and that someone won't leave cancer alone
-overly interested in someone and that cancer either can't have that someone, just recently became committed to that someone or wants that someone and resents the fact they want that someone
-planning life goals, cleaning up their life, making money or major life changing moves
-too many people wanting a piece of the cancer at the same time/or people are asking too much from cancer and cancer pulls out because it's hard to say no
-someone(s) continually misunderstands cancer and cancer gets fed up
-lack of safety and security or freedom
-limited ways to escape someone, something or a situation
-traumatic event
-others not being to accepting of cancer (continually overtime)
-not feeling loved enough
-feeling overly insecure
-someone is obsessed, possessive or controlling
-the secrets the cancer keeps is gettng to be overwhelming
-betrayal, breaking of trust, disloyalty or inexcusable lying
-sick or tired (physically)
-too vulnerable or out of control with their emotions (must pull it together).
-bad vibes or intuitive info coming off from someone

You sort of have to look at each situation or each cancer to determine the why. Timing? Same deal, case by case basis. But generally long periods (1 week+) probably indicate a negative reason and short periods (3 days to 1 week) may indicate a neutral reason and very short periods (1hr to 24hrs) probably indicate a positive reason. But the time periods and reasons could be unique to each cancer, it's hard to come up with definite rules to this. Cancers are highly unpredictable and mysterious. That's the best answer I can give. And shell time can be towards one person (only that one person gets the shell) or many people, it depends.
