Cancer with Capricorn North Node !

What exactly is the North Node? From the little information I got it means that this is what you are supposed to achieve or your karmic lesson.So basically, as a cancer with north node in capricorn I am supposed to be the exact opposite of my cancer self : practical, emotionally "tough" and career-oriented? Tough lesson to learn...
