Just depends..

I have experience with Psychiatry, and I've seen that in situations where someone is sorting through some weighty trauma or emergent drug issue..

Often it's been because someone postponed getting treatment so long that they need intensive, regular visits. Or it can be because someone's recently experienced a major trauma, or needs help averting some self-destructive behavior that may result (or be resulting) from some major trauma.

Could be so many things. It'd be useful to know what kind of psychologist this person is seeing. It may not be indicative, but would help.

There are also people with anxiety and panic disorders, or something like PTSD, that use a series of frequent visits...

Not sure if that helps, hope so. Honestly, the fact that he's seeking help is a big positive. Only he knows the extent of his issues.. are you comfortable asking him?

Happy to help.

Mind you, if a "workaholic" is making time to go to therapy- let alone on a weekly basis- it is likely a pressing situation to him. More than perhaps he's willing to acknowledge.

If you care about him, his issue(s) may take a while to unpack..

Not that you're asking for advice, but in my experience with these things, rather than try and delving further into when he seems unprepared to talk about it, I'd simply be supportive and encouraging when he *does* bring it up. It will help normalize talking about these things with you, while deepening trust in you. Know what I mean?
