Opening up him may be a bit difficult i think. Only he will do that when he is comfortable with you.
The route to his heart is definitely a friendly approach in a simple and relaxed manner. And don't wait for fast results, because you don't even know if he thinks of you as a special interest or not. It would be good to find out. (Cap guys are very slow, but all of the ones who i know, when they realise that they like you, they change behaviour and be kind of assertive ina cool way. I can tell you examples if you'd like.)
Later when the relationship improves it helps if you are very romantic, but don't do it too much in the very beginning, because it will only embarrass him and he will close up. (I think, wait for what other will say.)
About the phone. I don't really like phones, or texts. Sure, i use my phone to talk about meetings, text the time when i can go on a date, but i don't use my phone for a serious conversation. I am also not comfortable doing lovey-dovey stuff on the phone. When i want to talk with a person, i will make time to meet him in every case.
Also i often turn off my phone, simply because there are times when i don't want to be bothered, disturbed.
