Is it cervical, thoracis, or lumbar? Do you have bulging disc or herniated disc? What is going on?

All I know is my clients with disc disorders have so much pain. One of my regular clients just had the surgury about a month ago and said it did not help. Hers is in the lumbar spine herniated (L5). This client has a lot of pain in the hip region and some sciatic stuff.

I have another client who had same thing in his cervical spine herniated(C3 and C5) and he has lost a lot of his muscle tone in neck muscles. Crazy when I work on clients they have really tight muscles in the neck however his are hardly tight and hardly any tone. It really screwed with his entire body. Like most people they will turn their head i.e. when driving , he turns his whole thoracic spine so his muscles in the shoulder and thoracic area always messed up.

My ex-bf had bluging disc in the cervical and thoracic region bulging (C4, T6 and T7) Always in chronic pain. I used to do the massage on him and he said it helped alot. He used the traction tool that his chiropractor gave him and that seemed to work real well for him.

My grandfather also had a bulging disc in the lumbar spine and he gets the cortisteroid shots, but those are only temporary. Most likely it will reoccur. This resulted from shoveling snow so he does not do that any more.

I always recommend to my clients to use cold / hot therapy to the area, of course massage, chiropractic care, and excercise (core training). Another thing I see with clients is they often don't rehab it with continual excercise and core training. I imagine many of them are in so much pain. It is a hard injury to get better from. Maybe try accupuncture at least for the pain management.

I have two bulging discs... C5 & C6 I think. They press on my spinal cord sometimes and I get these like really random pains. Not anything constant and excruciating anymore, although at first it was. Now it's just kind of annoying chronic intermittent pain. :/

Just yesterday I was getting the tingling sensation all down my back with weird twitching pains... & it's been a year and a half since I injured it in the first place.

I would say as long as it's bearable and manageable, don't mess around with surgery.

Briana - That stinks, I know so many people with disc issues. I cannot even imagine what that is like. I do know for a fact that massage has helped many of my clients. It is usually temporary because once the patient starts moving and doing things it will usually start aggravating again. At least that is what I am noticing with my clients. It is so hard. I honestly understand why some of patients start abusing alcohol or drugs, however still a bad choice. Try also the cold hot therapy. If you go to natural store you can usually find those rice bags that you can either freeze or put in the microwave for heat or cold treatments. You should try the hot/cold therapy. Rule of thumb apply cold on the onset of inflammation or the start of when it hurts, than when relieved add the heat will help circulation.

Seavixan - That is interesting that yoga helped your mom. I 100% believe in the benafits of yoga. I will have to do some research on that and maybe start giving that as homework to some of my clients. I just thought of something.....it would be really cool to have a specialized yoga that targest disc disorders. *wheels start turning*
