Anyone here good with plants? I do OK at first when I get them...then it is so-so.

I wondered. I have well water and use a purifier for drinking water...should I also purify water to water my plants with? I have also heard you should put them in the shower now and then?? True?

I do well with Devil's Ivy and Aloe Vera...have managed to keep my Christmas cactus alive since last Christmas and some other plant that is unknown to me...
I have a fig tree that is kinda sad looking (always losing leaves, but, always growing new ones...) and well, my favorite...my Peace Lilly...I am afraid that I will kill it! It seems to need more attention...more frequent waterings...

Anyone have any tips??

I can't help you out Star, sorry...the only thing I've ever grown was like, a tomato plant in third grade. lol.

As a side note, and inspired by Luz's broccoli comment, when I was a little girl and I went over to my grandma's house, she had all these mint plants growing in her backyard. The fact that you could just pull off a leaf and chew it, completely filled me with wonder and fascination. That was my favorite part of being over at her house. The mint, as well as wearing her gloves and hats and high heels. lol.

Star,

This is for your plants and not you! This is how I use to make my living, horiticulture. I love it and I am good at it.

If you are having problems with your ivy browning, leaf damage or loss, it is most likely spider mites. Ivy is very suseptible to them; they are hard to see with the naked eye, and you have to know what you are looking for. You can mix together dish soap and water, in a spray bottle, and use this. Use about a teaspoon tp one quart of warm water. Also dont over water plants!!! Let them dry out a little in between waterings.

Aloe and Christmas cacuts are refered to as succulents, and they need very little water. If the cactus in not flowering, then it is dormant and should be given even less. Wait to you see it wilt and then water.

Good fertilizer for ivy is coffee. Plants that are flowering or will flower, should be fed high phosphate(fish emulsion). Catus and other succulents dont need anything. Just keep them in their usual environmental conditions, airid and dry and cool and preferbly near a window with alot of light.

Any more questions? I would be glad to answer them.
