I've been meaning to watch this movie for over a year now, but only managed to get around to at it last night(mostly due to its win of the "best foreign language film" category at the globes).
It's a difficult piece, centered around the Sabra and Shatila massacres, though there wasn't really much build-up to it, I thought.
This movie is really just made of a few disjointed little stories of the war in Lebanon, each of them fascinating, I thought, but the structure of the movie doesn't really lend itself to as dramatic a conclusion as one would expect going into it. There's no single moment the main character finally "pieces it all together" on his own, no lightbulb moment. This can be a little disappointing for people who are used to Hollywood's way of telling a story.
I thought the animation was really, really good, though I can see how it wouldn't be to everyone's taste.
Overall, this became one of my favorite movies last night, with its grittiness, introspection, and style . Highly recommended.
