270 votes are required to win the Presidential election

Each state has a specific number of electors, which the number of these electors is determined by the number of Congressional Representatives for that state. Of course, DC isn't a state, and it has been awarded 3 electors.

Basically, these assigned electors cast their votes as to whom they want to win, in accordance with the popular vote in their respective states.

So, when you vote, you are voting to win over the popular vote for your specific state, so the electors of your state will cast their vote in your favour.

Whether 2 people vote, or 2 million people vote in your state ..... only the designated number of votes will be cast for the Presidential election.

So, your vote doesn't count accumulatively .. but, it does count to win the popular vote in your respective state.

However, I do believe that it is very unfair to even have the electoral college.

Here's how your vote wouldn't matter, due to having electors ....

Take Arizona and Alabama to use as an example ...this is hypothetical, of course ...

Arizona has 10 electoral votes
Alabama has 9 electoral votes

Say that 100,000 people from each of those two states voted.

In Arizona - 60,000 voted for Romney, and 40,000 voted for Obama .. the majority votes are for Romney so he would get 10 electoral votes

In Alabama - Obama gets 100% of the votes at 100,000, which the majority ... however, only 9 votes get cast for Obama

so, it becomes unfair in this scenario because eventhough Obama had more votes from the citizens, Romney gets one more voted casted in his favor.
