LOL Laz. I am currently doing a subject called professional responsibility which includes discussions on how laywers are perceived by the general public. I have copied an answer here that may explain somewhat why lawyers are perceived negatively.

(d) Why do lawyers have a bad image in the view of some members of the public?
? Why won?t sharks attack lawyers? Professional courtesy.

? What do you call an honest lawyer? A paradox.

All lawyers, regardless of position, fall within the class of ?lawyer jokes? and ridicule.
The public perceives the typical lawyer as blood sucking, unemotional, upper class (thus far removed from their own station), ruthless and perhaps more concerned with their own personal interests rather than those of the client. In reality this is far from the truth. The public may not fully understand the concepts and procedures of the legal system, nor be willing to accept any explanation offered because the explanation is complex. This position may never change due to the fact that the legal profession is a profession and therefore, there is not only a degree held gained through years of study, but also a skill needed which is above and beyond the comprehension of the lay members of the community.

Sure, there are genuine cases of misconduct, misappropriation, theft etc, but I believe these cases only reinforce the negative image, rather than be the sole responsibility of creating the image in the first instance.

The law is cold, mostly devoid of emotion, and can be brutal. Delivering the facts of a matter, the law as it stands and the process in proceeding to obtain results for a client is usually given in a detached, impersonal manner. The client does not understand that this lack of emotional investment, at least shown outwardly, and the facts of any legal position affecting the client that may not be the desired answer, or in fact a fair position to the client as it stands in law, is the result of the system we use and is in essence, the proper position a lawyer should take to serve the client in the best possible way.
