Jeremiah pleas with the people of Judah to turn to god to save them from their immoral sins ...
Jeremiah 29:
13 - You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
14 - I will be found by you
If god really wanted to save them, he would, he would just do it .. but, he cannot because he doesn't exist.
The people however, have translated this verse to mean just that, and the blind lambs follow. On a different note, I find it ironic that sheep follow each other blindly, and we use the term "lamb" to describe the people of god to mean something other than submission.
Back to topic .. people did indeed translate what Jeremiah was saying to mean that they must submit .. and so they did/still do.
When what this passage is actually saying in reality is ......... what you put all energy into thinking, you will recieve

They couldn't grasp this concept .. many today are still this ignorant, sadly. So, if he throned a certain person as being worthy for them to give of themselves to ... then at least these poor souls would be projecting this energy into the collective.
