Indecent Proposal (1993) - John Places a Bet - John (Robert Redford) predicts that Diana (Demi Moore) will enjoy herself and reassures her that nothing will happen that she doesn't choose.
Diana (Demi Moore): You're the one who has to buy women
John (Robert Redford): You think I have to buy women?
Diana (Demi Moore): Why me then?
John (Robert Redford): I bought you because you said you couldn't be bought.
Diana (Demi Moore): I can't be bought; we're just going to f**k as I understand it.
John (Robert Redford): You might enjoy it.
Diana (Demi Moore): Don't bet on it.
John (Robert Redford): I think I will ...
"Suggest coin flip", heads, we do, tails we call this whole thing off, turn the boat around,
go home, no hard feelings ... what do you say?
Diana (Demi Moore): It's your party
John (Robert Redford): It's my lucky dollar; so I can't lose.
"Flips coins and win"
John (Robert Redford): Trust me, nothing's gonna to happen, you don't choose.
"John leans for a sensual kiss, Diana closes her eyes. The scene blacks out ... "

"That's the special thing about Scorpio. Makes you look at yourself and your long held beliefs about yourself. It creates churning and transforms. She thought she was doing this for her husband for their love. Who was she really doing it for..."
True, see I don't think she knew how strong her love of money or material thing was. He brought it up to the surface, so she or the couple could see.
"It would be a joy though, to be so rich you could create such scenarios just to show how true or untrue someone is to their values."
You wouldn't want to lose yourself doing that though but getting people to really see themselves as they is really important for self growth and peace.
"That is the truth now isnt it. It is in action all around us in various capacities.
In that movie the blackmail was outright. it was a very interesting movie.....wish i can see it without it causing so many extreme reactions within me!!"
It was an interesting movie, indeed. The reaction at first glance can be frustrating, just seeing how it went down but when you really look into it, all you see is grown people making choices. Just not always honest with themselves.

^^ i think that is what makes the movie so interesting. There is nothing conclusive the movie is telling you about the character and what their thought process is. Every person seeing it is able to see their unique take of the undercurrent.
It is a "thinking" movie lol

that is the hierarchy for me... my emotions/spirit come first... then the physical world.
i'll never really know the world without my spirit. One will always come first.
i once forced myself in a physical way in a relationship i'd long left emotionally, because i still cared so much about the guy. i ignored myself. it took me a looooooong long time to re-animate my ability to feel. veritable years. sometimes i'm not entirely sure i'm still connected as i once was. but i'm nearly there. so now the thought of forcing something out of myself that isnt naturally emotionally there honestly makes me sad.
il m'est impossible de le faire

(((Waves at Ray's Heart)))Good to see you around! Although, I'm not here that much either 😉
First, I love this movie for a lot of reasons. But, you are correct that there are a lot of things in play here. Obviously Robert Redford was drawn to Demi's character, but I think he was also trying to "teach them" something too.
Second, I don't believe money buys happiness; HOWEVER, Crystal McCrary and Rita Ewing (both married to basketball players), co-wrote a book called "Homecourt Advantage." When I watched their interview when the book came out (some years ago). One thing they clearly stated was that money doesn't buy happiness, but it affords you options. One of them used an example of a girlfriend who said that since they were rich, they were happy and didn't have problems. They both clearly pointed out that that was wrong. They have the SAME problems as their girlfriends have, but because they have money, they are better equipped to seek counseling, leave a volatile and/or abusive relationship with money to ensure their children are taken care of and they don't have to live out of their cars, homeless shelters or on the streets. So while they have the same problems as anyone, when you have money, you have a whole host of options that other people don't have.
Why do you think that a question that all life coaches and career seeking counselors and books always have some variation on this question, "If money wasn't a concern, what would you WANT to do?" That's not to say that there aren't self-made millionaires who struggled and pulled themselves up by their bootstraps, but nowadays (barring the Silicon giant .com/technology millionaires), it's difficult to create wealth, not impossible, but definitely difficult with a lot of sacrifices. Why do you think so many people play the lottery?

The movie was about more than the proposal. It was about a means to an end. What are you willing to do or not do for the greater good.
If you recall, they were cash strapped in the movie. They needed the money. She did not want to do it in the beginning. Her husband asked her to. There are so many people on this forum and in RL that have done much more for much less.
I would do it and 98% of the people on here would to. I would do it for myself, add the fact that my family needs me. I wouldn't even think twice.
