Indecent Proposal (1993) - John Places a Bet - John (Robert Redford) predicts that Diana (Demi Moore) will enjoy herself and reassures her that nothing will happen that she doesn't choose.

Diana (Demi Moore): You're the one who has to buy women

John (Robert Redford): You think I have to buy women?

Diana (Demi Moore): Why me then?

John (Robert Redford): I bought you because you said you couldn't be bought.

Diana (Demi Moore): I can't be bought; we're just going to f**k as I understand it.

John (Robert Redford): You might enjoy it.

Diana (Demi Moore): Don't bet on it.

John (Robert Redford): I think I will ...

"Suggest coin flip", heads, we do, tails we call this whole thing off, turn the boat around,
go home, no hard feelings ... what do you say?

Diana (Demi Moore): It's your party

John (Robert Redford): It's my lucky dollar; so I can't lose.

"Flips coins and win"

John (Robert Redford): Trust me, nothing's gonna to happen, you don't choose.

"John leans for a sensual kiss, Diana closes her eyes. The scene blacks out ... "

"The interesting part, however, is that this form of "security" is a massive honkin' VARIABLE. It is subject to CHANGE. And it's often the most obstreperous, unforeseen sort of change. Now consider how much of our emotional, mental, and physical energies we invest in something so unstable. And when change does (often inevitably) occur, our well-being goes down in flames.

Identity crisis. Do you own your stuff, or does your stuff own you? This isn't a question about *having* (whether more or less, it makes no difference.) it's about how you think about what you have."

Exactly and the more attached you are to material, the more you can be manipulated. It's not that the person as a direct grip on the other but has a direct grip on the things that owns you.

That's the special thing about Scorpio. Makes you look at yourself and your long held beliefs about yourself. It creates churning and transforms. She thought she was doing this for her husband for their love. Who was she really doing it for...

True, see I don't think she knew how strong her love of money or material thing was. He brought it up to the surface, so she or the couple could see.

"It would be a joy though, to be so rich you could create such scenarios just to show how true or untrue someone is to their values."

You wouldn't want to lose yourself doing that though but getting people to really see themselves as they is really important for self growth and peace.

"That is the truth now isnt it. It is in action all around us in various capacities.
In that movie the blackmail was outright. it was a very interesting movie.....wish i can see it without it causing so many extreme reactions within me!!"

It was an interesting movie, indeed. The reaction at first glance can be frustrating, just seeing how it went down but when you really look into it, all you see is grown people making choices. Just not always honest with themselves.

Are you sure that money was the only reason she goes with Robert redfords character for?

And yeah, what were his motives for doing what he did? He seemed genuinely curious, exploring. And thru exploring them he is exploring himself. Like a mirror by itself is empty.

@Urania ... I don't think so but it's what she was trying to convince herself of, that money was the only reason that this would happen. I think they all acted according to their own nature. Every step in life takes you to another place, where you get to know more about yourself.

"the day i am bought is the day i die emotionally."

@CP ... Sad, if you remain connected spiritually you will always live emotionally.

"i think that is what makes the movie so interesting. There is nothing conclusive the movie is telling you about the character and what their thought process is. Every person seeing it is able to see their unique take of the undercurrent.
It is a "thinking" movie lol"

@Sunrays ... indeed, it's why I brought it up, see what others had to say. It got me thinking for sure. My kind of script!

that is the hierarchy for me... my emotions/spirit come first... then the physical world.

i'll never really know the world without my spirit. One will always come first.

i once forced myself in a physical way in a relationship i'd long left emotionally, because i still cared so much about the guy. i ignored myself. it took me a looooooong long time to re-animate my ability to feel. veritable years. sometimes i'm not entirely sure i'm still connected as i once was. but i'm nearly there. so now the thought of forcing something out of myself that isnt naturally emotionally there honestly makes me sad.

Completely agree! But for Demi I think it's also about scratching an itch that isn't there or something like that. Also, the Scorpio theme of the Phoenix going down in flames and then rebirthing purified. I think that happens too to Demi and woody harrelsons relationship. When they get back together, they don't have any more illusions about each other. So from here on they will be completely 'real'. It's red fords character I feel sorry for. He begins with an experiment that he thinks he knows the conclusion to. But then he falls for Demi and then of course loses the girl. Some would say that was quite deserved.

The movie was about more than the proposal. It was about a means to an end. What are you willing to do or not do for the greater good.

If you recall, they were cash strapped in the movie. They needed the money. She did not want to do it in the beginning. Her husband asked her to. There are so many people on this forum and in RL that have done much more for much less.

I would do it and 98% of the people on here would to. I would do it for myself, add the fact that my family needs me. I wouldn't even think twice.

(((Waves at Ray's Heart)))Good to see you around! Although, I'm not here that much either 😉
First, I love this movie for a lot of reasons. But, you are correct that there are a lot of things in play here. Obviously Robert Redford was drawn to Demi's character, but I think he was also trying to "teach them" something too.
Second, I don't believe money buys happiness; HOWEVER, Crystal McCrary and Rita Ewing (both married to basketball players), co-wrote a book called "Homecourt Advantage." When I watched their interview when the book came out (some years ago). One thing they clearly stated was that money doesn't buy happiness, but it affords you options. One of them used an example of a girlfriend who said that since they were rich, they were happy and didn't have problems. They both clearly pointed out that that was wrong. They have the SAME problems as their girlfriends have, but because they have money, they are better equipped to seek counseling, leave a volatile and/or abusive relationship with money to ensure their children are taken care of and they don't have to live out of their cars, homeless shelters or on the streets. So while they have the same problems as anyone, when you have money, you have a whole host of options that other people don't have.
Why do you think that a question that all life coaches and career seeking counselors and books always have some variation on this question, "If money wasn't a concern, what would you WANT to do?" That's not to say that there aren't self-made millionaires who struggled and pulled themselves up by their bootstraps, but nowadays (barring the Silicon giant .com/technology millionaires), it's difficult to create wealth, not impossible, but definitely difficult with a lot of sacrifices. Why do you think so many people play the lottery?

there are so many resources to tap into... one should never have to sell out. it doesnt strike me as desperation and no way out, or doing it for your dependents... it strikes me as simple laziness and a desire for the fast way out. imo, id be helping my dependents better maintaining strength of character and inspiring better solutions.

That's good, having at least a sense of your spiritual self, keeps you from being fully attached to the things that can be bought, the more you're attached to things, the more you can be manipulated by those who can acquire those things easily. I think you have a spiritual sense, just from some of your written pieces I got to read in the past, it shows that at least a part of your happiness, rely on something that money can not afford.

Hi USC, it's been awhile, great seeing you. thanks for your insight, well money controls the natural resources of the world, the fact that people have to work for money so they can pay for their own lives, they only service the people that has some. In the world we live in today the more you depend on the others to live the more power those with money have because they can acquire easily the things that you need to survive. Once they have that power they can use it according to their nature. He was interested in her indeed and her stand was also a challenge that

I remember it's how the movie started indeed and in real life these situations always start in time of despair but not everybody acts the same, it's what you have gathered during the years prior to these moments that will dictate what you'll do during such time. If you're comfortable with what you'd do, then it's peace. It's not about what the rest of the world would do if they were in your position.
