What is so funny about bodily functions?

I have a son. He's always thought that poops, farts, etc are hilarious. And I've noticed, even grown men think these things are funny. So, from a guy's point of view, what's so funny about it?

I asked my son this question. He said "It just is".

Because they happen at the least expected times and at times when there's an awkward silence in the room. Basically they come at inopportune times and usually embarrass someone. If someone is trying to fart or burp it loses its comedy basis on embarrassment and surprise and thus it's not that funny. Think of it as someone using the same joke more than once and they use it over and over again and it's not funny anymore.

Shock value. Everyone does it but some people still act like it's dirty or gross. If people didn't react the way they do, it wouldn't be funny.

What's wrong with lifting up your leg and let one rip you just have to trust your fart or you may pay for it.
