Leanne Hecht Bearden may not be missing after all -- in fact, she might be missing by her own accord.
That's what her family said Thursday, after days of pushing for help in finding the 33-year-old last seen leaving her in-law's house in Garden Ridge, Texas, just northeast of San Antonio.
But the bottom line is that Bearden is still missing, nearly two weeks after she went for a walk.
Pointing to investigative work done by the Garden Ridge police, the Comal County Sheriff's Office and Texas Rangers, the family said they now believe Bearden may have gone missing intentionally.
"There is evidence that Leanne may have voluntarily left the area, and we understand this is a strong possibility," the family said in a statement posted Thursday on a Facebook page devoted to finding the young woman.
If nothing else, Bearden is a veteran traveler. In the last couple of years, she traveled the world with her husband, Josh Bearden, in an epic 22-month trek that she extensively documented in a blog. They climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, swam in the Dead Sea, attended an Indian wedding and much, much more.
They now think she did not want to go back to her boring life. The husband has an alibi.
Of course I could. I said it on Misc. I'll say it here. When I saw her picture my first thought was 'Underground or dead.' I'd like to lean to the left but it feels more to the right. You always hope you're wrong. 😢
I don't think I could. After traveling the world to go back to "cubicle and cul-de-sac" life would surely do me in.
However, I do think I would have had the courage to tell my husband if he were not abusive that I could not go back. If he is abusive, then why not vanish while abroad? Certainly, that would have been uber easy.
It would be easy to disappear. Even that would require planning as you wouldn't want credit cards, mobile, etc. being traced. I would have looked at that crawl as an adventure abroad and welcomed the routine of home again. Eager to see family and friends. I would long to return I'm sure and plan another in future.
If he was abusive, cruel, controlling there are steps to be taken. But only she knows whether or not that was even an issue. Part of the abuse, no? The abuser wants to ensure you are isolated and feeling like there is nothing and no one to turn too to get out. There's even a phone app for that to send distress texts or call the police.
