Ascendant and the Family Dynamics

The Ascendant is one of the most important points in your birth chart, also called the Rising sign. It is the first energy you project to others, the mask we wear. It is looked at in determining appearance. It is your chart ruler. It is the role you played in your family and often referred to as the sign your family gave you.??

Inheritance of the Ascendant

All these elements: your appearance, the looks you inherited, your mask, all come from your family. So much so that often the first born of the family carries the Sun sign of the father as their Ascendant. I, for example, am the first born.?? I am a Capricorn Ascendant and my father is a Capricorn. The Ascendant also is used to predict the sign of the first born by looking at the mother's chart and the sign on the 5th House (or 4th House if houses are intercepted). My mother is a Sag Ascendant, I'm her first born, an Aries, the sign of her 5th house. Likewise, I am Capricorn Ascendant, my first born is a Taurus, and my 4th??house is Taurus (I have intercepted houses).

Psychology of the Ascendant

In relation to psychology, the Ascendant is the superego. The Sun is the Ego and the Moon is the Id. The Ascendant is on the cusp of the 1st house. The 1st House is a Fire House belonging to the 1st sign of the zodiac, Aries. It is the House of Self.?? Aries represents the ages from birth to seven years of age just as Taurus represent the age from 8 - 15. Age 0 - 7 are considered the most formative years. This period is representative of the Ascendant and the 1st house.

Psychology describes the superego, the Ascendant, as a judge or censor for the thoughts and actions of the ego --an "internalized parent" to bring behavior under control. Sigmund Freud theorized that the core of your personality is formed before age 6. Alfred Adler felt that we are social creatures governed by social urges. The first relationship formed is that with the mother in the womb. The mother is represented by the Moon, the Id. The Id, the Moon, is the innate instincts and urges present at birth - self-serving, irrational, impulsive, and totally unconscious - this is the Moon. The ego (Sun sign) is always in the middle dealing not only with id (Moon) and superego (Ascendant), but also with external reality. The Ego is represented by the Sun sign. Ascendant and the Family Roles

Venus in the 1st can be indicative of the favorite child. The child that was much anticipated as the result of a couple who is admired, popular and loved; a child born in beautiful place; born in wealth or sometime of opulence.

Uranus in the 1st can indicate the rebellious child, an only child; a surprise birth; unstable environment; a family of little means; a family that move often; an ethnic background that is quite diverse. The child born in a strange time in the family; strong influence of grandparents or other family member;

The Ascendant and Relationships

Once again, in relation to astrology, this is representative of the 1st house, 7th house axis, Aries/Libra, of self and relationships, respectively. The 1st House of Self naturally opposed the 7th House of Relationships. It's supposed to be that way. Your superego and your relationship with others is clearly representative of this axis. Your childhood affects the 1st house 7th house axis and the balance required thereof in compromising self and others along the 1st house 7th house axis and knowing when to slide one way or the other, and by what degree, on that 1st house/ 7thhouse axis. Relationships take compromise and that is the balance of the 1st house 7th house axis.

So, if you are having difficulties in relationships, don't just look to the 7th house. Look at yourself, the first house. You may see an Aries Ascendant or Sun, after having a failed relationship, seek shelter far down into the Aries side of the Aries/Libra Axis. You may see an Aries Ascendant or Sun make exclamations of losing themselves on the Libra side of the Axis often blaming the partner for this loss. They clearly have not been able to find a balance on this axis. The middle is no haven, nor is one end or the other of the axis. It is the ability to know which situations require movement and in what direction. This axis of self and relationships is the symbol for us all.

This is the 1st House 7th House Axis: You have to know who you are in order to love yourself in order to love someone else. It aligns your entire chart in accordance with the time you were born.

Whether your 1st House/ 7th House Axis is aligned with the signs Cancer and Capricorn or Taurus and Scorpio, you know what characteristics you have to navigate to reach the self-awareness necessary for compromise and relationships.

I'm Aqua rising and I feel this causes a lot of problems in my life. People think I'm a cold, detached person.

Just on a side note....what do you think about vertex as it is considered the 2nd ascendant.

I find the vertex best used in synastry.

Can't see it as a second Ascendant because of what the Ascendant represents, as described in this topic.

The Vertex is more representative of the future.

I don't understand the connection between ASC and relatives. My ASC is the same as my sibling's sun sign but my sibling and I don't get along.

The problems you are having with your siblings may have nothing to do with your Ascendant.

Synastry is the best approach in understanding the connection or disconnection with you and your siblings. A chart overlay would help as well.

Mother has a Sag 5th house. My chart has Jupiter/9th house emphasis somewhat.

Gemini Asc/Dominant, Air Dom. Cancer sun
Mother is a Gemini sun with a pisces moon, sister also a gem sun (3 degrees away from my asc) but with a cancer moon and a Capricorn asc. My father is a Libra sun with a scorp moon. Brother is a Leo-Cancer cusper, taurus moon, and from the info that I was given even though it doesn't seem like it, a sag asc and Libra mc

I have Venus in my first house.
Middle child

Also have mars in my first house

My father is an Aries Sun and I am a first houser.

I have Venus in 1st house but I also have Mars there in 1st house, that's kinda ruined the 1st house Venus awesomeness I guess.
