Am I alone in this thought? Because recently, I was driving around here in La La land, seeing billboard after billboard--ad after ad for new films that just know are going to suck--OR--they'll just be "Okay"--you know, mediocre--nothing to write home about as the saying goes. Of course there more films being made today than ever before--I don't think--in fact, I KNOW that there weren't this many films made 20 years ago. It 's come down to this in entertainment: Quanity, not quality.
Yeahh, the quality of scripts out there depicting women are still pretty poor. And I think it's because the majority of screenplays that get sold are written by men--(who usually don't portray women respectfully) and it's still pathetic.
I don't intend to see Gangs of New York Kenny, but, I hope it meets your expectations. I just hope it isn't hyped up and ultra commercial. I hate that element in films today. Every director nowadays is trying to be the next Spielberg. Usually Scorcese does well, paying attention to craft and not the boxoffice. I think Good Fellas, Casino and Taxi Driver are his best works ever. I'll be watching Taxi Driver next week at a theater. Can't wait.
I still think that the need for entertainment is based on quanity and not quality. In the end, there's no sense of respect in what a filmmaker does but rather, "how much can I make on this one?"
If you want to see real looking women and real scripts and real acting... wath the British soap operas. The people on those shows are not beautiful people playing dress up but ordinary looking people with middle aged women playing middle aged parts and etc. etc. They're really funny too but I saw them in Canada.
Usually you can't go wrong with the sci-fi and fantas genre. Harry Potter may be kids stuff but I love it and Lord of the Rings speaks for itself. Those movies are set in totally different atmospheres and worlds and events and therefore the characters are expected to act like normal people. It gives the directors a bit more to work with than stereotypes that the studio imposes on them.
I like scifi and fantasy too but to make a comparison, I have to say that John Boorman's "Excalibur" was made better. Even the special effects work of Ray Harryhausen in "Clash of the Titans" was intriguing. Both of these films came out in '82 I think.
*ahem* im looking foward to watching gangs of new york also, and i sorta wanna watch that hot chick because i recently watched the ring and i wanna watch something retardedly funny after that experience. And what else... but basically movies today arent really original. Might i mention that XXX SUCKED MAJOR HAIRY ASS?
Today I saw an ad in a 'zine about a new indie film called "Love Liza" starring a real good actor--Philip Seymore Hoffman. His older bro wrote the script and actor Scott Louiso directed. It looks decent. I think I'll bet my money on it.
